My fiance and I are planning a bistro French wedding for late summer ‘08. I’ve made an inspiration board and many of the details have already fallen into place. For example, the STDs, dresses and suit shown in the .pdf are actually ours. Our color palette is blue French lavender, kraft paper brown, wine/burgundy, and slate. Unfortunately, I’m having an incredibly difficult time figuring out what to do for invitations. I like having a theme to give focus to the day, but I don’t want it to veer into theme park. So these are the two questions I have for you and the EAD readers: First, do any invitations spring to mind upon viewing my board? I’d love any advice you might have. And second, what’s a good rule of thumb when it comes to deciding when a theme has gone too far? There is a fine line between cohesive and tacky, right? How do you decide?

Here is the board she’s prepared (which I am madly in love with)!

I’ll be back this afternoon with a post of ideas for Bridget and my personal opinion on the “theme” question - but in the meantime, I want all of you to chime in with opinions!  Chop-chop.  :)

we heart your comments!

I love the wine bottle table numbers and the bridesmaids dress. I wanted it in blue for my bmaids, but alas, it’s nowhere to be found in any size smaller than an 8.

There is a great graphic package on http://www.designerdigitals.com that I just bought that I think would look great (link below). Ceci New York used one of the graphics on one of their amazing invitation suites (link also below). Hopefully that will give you some inspiration. In unrelated news…that’s my wedding dress! yipeeeee!

I love your color scheme…. and I definitely don’t think you’ve carried your theme too far! It doesn’t look over the top in any way. It’s very elegant! I think that if someone can look at pictures and guess what the “theme” was, you may have taken it a bit too far. But from looking at your board, I don’t see a French bistro (your inspiration) - it looks like a simply elegant, gracious and warm affair.
As far as invitations go, I would keep them simple like your STD’s. I would use that dark gray color (I love that your STD’s look like chalkboards!). I think that graphic pakage that Kelly listed is really pretty, and could work well.

You definitely have the feeling of the French countryside without being tacky at all!! I love your inspiration and the way you have carried it out is perfect. Try http://www.atelierisabey.com. she knows French! And, good luck iwth your wedding. It looks like a beautiful and elegant affair!!

I think you could play with the French Bistro idea a little bit more, even, especially with your invites. A lot of those traditional Parisian Bistros have very similar menus and graphics, with a kind of turn of the century feel to them. I think it’d be fun to look at those for inspiration in font, graphics, etc.

This is beautiful. I love that your colors come with textures as well - “blue French lavender, Kraft paper brown…”

I absolutely love this inspiration board! Thank you for sharing. Your blog is incredible and I adore all of the stunning wedding decor and inspiration!
