kat, i think it completely depends on what you're doing. for your time of day and color scheme, i think some soft amber uplighting would be enough, which would probably be a few hundred dollars. pin spotting, full room lighting, etc would be much more expensive

Thanks for the ideas. I like the suggestion of putting the dance floor in the middle, although....do you think it would segregate the guests? I would be afraid we would end up with his family on one end and mine on the other.

I'm also a fan of the candle light. I just wasn't sure how much I could get away with. As for other special lighting, how much does that usually cost?

Lighting is key to any room. Create an atmosphere. Also, using different size tables- high and low, round and rectangular, can produce a feeling of relaxed intimacy. Another idea is to create a lounge area with couches and cocktail tables to break up the expanse of the room. Food stations can be used to enhance the decor- a lucite table lit from underneath with levels of something delicious on each. Or, a table of cheeses and other wonderful finger foods. There are many ways to make a large space feel more intimate. Good luck with your wedding!

hey kat! just a couple more ideas for you - if you can't hang anything, try screens like this one:

http://www.labargeinc.com/images/new_products/LS0054.jpg

also, since you're already paying a lot for your food, make your food your decor! here's a blurb we did on food and drink displays that might help (I LOVE this for afternoon receptions):

and last but not least, remember that if you tables look fabulous and you have the right lighting, people won't be looking at the walls. this was a lesson i had to teach myself too but it's true!

oh - and make the dance floor really large, since you have the room. use cocktail tables to kind of barrier off the space. that will fill up a lot of the room - especially if you put the dance floor and the main bar smack in the middle of the room and spread the low tables around both sides. Nobody will notice the edges of the room if all the focus is in the middle and this doesn't cost a thing. :)
