Excellent tip about handing each person their tip personally! I've heard of some event companies that pocket the tips and tell their employees at the end of the evening that there wasn't one... Don't make it easy for a Manager to do this to his people, and cast You the Happy Couple in the role of the Bad Guys.

[...] Tipping a vendor is not required, but it does show the vendor that they have done a good job. Even if they are charging you a service charge, it doesn’t include a tip for the people who are doing the actual work. So, how much do you tip? (Before I start on this, most people are horrified by the idea of you putting out a tip jar so that your guests can tip.) [...]

I also like to point out that tipping should directly correlate with performance.

Miss Capitol Hill - Usually the service charge pays the catering manager's salary and the cost to keep the venue open in the evening. At least that is what most will tell you. I'd ask your venue specifically what it goes for and then decide from there.

Thanks for the post - luckily our caterers included the gratuity (separate from the service fee) in our estimate. But I'll be interested to find out who else and how much to tip!

This is always such a sticky area. Can I ask, though,...if the 22% extra you are charging for "service" does not go towards the people serving you then what does it go to?

I don't want to leave the lowest paid workers out in the cold but at the same time I feel like there are already SO many mark-ups (privacy fees, rental fees, service fees, taxes, etc.) .
If you had to pay an additional 15-20% in tips to the service staff on top of the 22% you already get charged for "service" you are basically talking about paying 45% extra on top of the base price. That seems like an awful lot.

I'd feel better if I knew that 22% I had already paid was going to something real and not just lining the reception sites pocket. So is it going to something real or is this just a mark-up?
