Vintage Weddings

I love old things. I love the sense of history behind them, their character and charm. When I was first planning my wedding and thinking about what type of “look” or “feel” I was going for, vintage came to mind. I don’t want my wedding to be a costume party, but I do want that classic look that isn’t so rooted in today’s trends that in 10 years I’ll be groaning over my photos! I want something pretty and classic with a nod to both the past and today.

Today, many brides are going for the vintage look in their weddings whether it be tea length dresses, birdcage veils, or other traditional elements. I thought it would be fun to take a look at some true vintage weddings as well as some more modern ones that were vintage-inspired.

One element that is still around today, no matter what type of wedding you’re having, is having the groom look different from his groomsmen, oftentimes by wearing a different colored tie:

From these pictures, you can see that veils have really evolved from earlier in the 20th century. Maybe the larger veils of the late 80’s and 90’s were inspired by these?

Do you think these bridesmaids ever wore these again?

I just love looking at old photos like this! It always makes me wonder about these people, like what were they like? How did their lives unfold?

Evoking some of the feeling from those earlier times, here are some modern brides with vintage style:

Some of the vintage inspired things I’m planning on incorporating are my jewelry, the style of flowers, and use of vintage glass for our centerpieces. Is there anything vintage inspired you plan on incorporating? Have you seen any cool vintage inspired goodness at other weddings?

Hope you all have a great weekend!

I almost wore my grandmothers wedding dress! I think it is such a beautiful thing when the whole family history is celebrated, because that is so much of what a marriage is. Not just two people coming together, but two families, two heritages.

I’m planning on incorporating a lot of vintage - classic tradition into my southern style wedding next summer in Kentucky. I loved seeing this entry and reading about the different vintage styles and ideas. :) Thanks!

Great post! Vintage is in for next year - even with flowers. Muted and antique colored roses are a budget friendly option. Flowers that you might find in your garden like peonies, garden roses, hellebores, zinnias, dahlias, and cosmos – anything that is scented, unique, ruffled or delicate - are also perfect for creating a vintage feeling. Antique fabrics, dupioni silk ribbon, buttons and brooches extend the vintage style into the stem wrap of a bouquet. And antique food tins, mason jars, old wooden fruit crates and even rusted planters filled with flowers or fruit can be to carry the vintage theme throughout the table décor.
