Just One More Bite

This week DJ and I went to a cakery (also a bakery, but they are clear that it is a cakery) to taste cakes.   I meant to take pictures of the actual cake tasting, but.  Um.  I was apparently too busy shoving cake into my cake-hole.  We were expecting tiny chunks of cake, so we asked to try five (our of probably 10) flavors.  They brought five full pieces to each of us.  We didn’t even need to share!  It was heaven, and I had a small stroke over the little tubs of fillings.

Our cake will be three layers (8″, 10″, 12″), frosted in tasty buttercream.  Red velvet with vanilla filling for the bottom layer, and yellow with Bavarian cream for the top two.  The yellow cake was shockingly tasty.  I was expecting something like a boxed mix, and was very pleasantly surprised.

I had all kinds of ideas for decoration, but was feeling lazy at decision time.  So I just asked for a copy of this cake.  The picture above is actually a photo of an ad I ripped from Bon Appetit early last year.  I liked that it was a) not fondant b) monochromatic c) just a tad precious.

Now I need to find a 14″ footed cake stand.  Something tells me this won’t be easy.

we heart your comments!

I found a great article in Martha Stewart weddings about making your own cake base using knobs (like for a chest of drawers…think about Anthro’s knobs!) as the feet and a round cut table top piece from a hardware store. Paint the wood and line the edges of base with ribbon that matches your theme… This will my fiance’s hand-made bit of our wedding! :)

Elizabeth, that’s a great idea! I had more of a pedestal in mind, but the cute knobs might sway me your direction!

I got married almost 2 years ago, but somehow find myself very enthralled with wedding details, still. :)
We had a family friend make our cakes and I made the cake stands. I had three separate cakes–at three different heights. What I did was went to Goodwill and found all sizes of glass platters. I then found glass candle stick holders and used clear adhesive glue and put them together! I then ended up with unique and CLASSY cake stands…all for about $3-$4 EACH!
