A Veil(ed) Question

I need help, please.  And not in a tell-me-about-a-time-when-you-felt-like-the-protagonist way.  No, this time I really need help.  Please?

I’m having trouble deciding on a veil, and I’m stuck. Part of the decision is already made – my mom cried when she saw me in a long (chapel) veil, and it’s very pretty with the dress.

But I want something more. Something puffy. Something like this.

The bride designed it, and her mother in law made it.   It has four pieces.  I’m utterly in love with it.  You can see more here and here.

Okay, it’s huge.  I would want mine somewhat less tall.

This one is maybe more wearable (for me.)  This bride couldn’t find what she wanted, so she made her own.

Each of these girls is wearing her pouf with a longer veil, which is what I would do.  I might set the pouf a bit lower on my head, but still. You get the idea – there would be pouf. I would also probably ditch the long veil for the reception, but keep the pouf.

So here’s where I’m not sure.  They are both wearing narrow mermaid dresses. My dress is a-line.  Would there be just to much volume if I wore a big veil with a not-straight skirt?

Of course, I also promised not to show the dress to the whole world, which makes the question more general than I’d like. Any thoughts on wearing a puffy veil with an a-line dress?

we heart your comments!

what if you did two veils? wear them both for the ceremony..and keep the puffy one for the rest of the night…the puffy one could be something like this:

i’m wearing a puffy veil too! i think it looks FANTASTIC with my trumpet dress so i imagine it would look just as great with an A-line.
mine was my mother’s veil, 3 pieces (although i took the cathedral length off so it was originally 4) but they’re all elbow length now… not sure it would work with all chapel. it’s so ridiculously easy to make these your self… if you have a sewing machine it takes a matter of seconds, if you have a needle and thread it takes less than 20 minutes.
if you’re going with the chapel length i’d recommend adding 2-3 layers of a shorter length on top (elbow or shorter), otherwise it’ll be too heavy and you’ll lose the poof you’re going for on top
let me know if you want to see any p ictures of mine, i’d be happy to share : )

It depends HOW poofy your veil is. The first thing your guests should be looking at as your walking down the aisle, is you. Then your dress, then your veil, your bouquet, and so on. If there is too much poof, it off-sets that balance and it is no longer part of your ensemble, but a distraction, which is the last thing you want!

Does your bridal shop have some poofier veils? Mine was just a touch poofy. Just 2-layers, and I wore the one as a blusher when I walked down the aisle.

Some people say tulle is tulle, but it’s not. If you’re going to make your own, I would splurge on a high quality tulle. A less quality tulle feels itchy and isn’t as sheer, which is especially important if you’re wearing the one layer as a blusher. But, also important so you can see the back of your dress as you walk down the aisle.

That is a picture of my veil, and of course you are more than welcome to browse through my other wedding-day pictures to get a better idea of what my veil looked like, and what it looked like with my dress. My dress was an A-line as well (Casablanca 1900). One layer was too flat, and I for sure needed some poof.

Wow, sorry that was kinda an overload of info, but I hope that helps! Best of luck :)

P.S. my longest layer was elbow length

oh the veil! I think you can pull off a poof with an a-line. my question would be about your hair. She wore hers down and simple, which allowed a good balance for the big poof. A big poof would almost take the place of dramatic hair, you know?

go with what you love…

I think it’ll be fine..

Thank you all for your advice – and PICTURES! I should have asked for pictures, but you all are above and beyond helpful and sent them anyway. So appreciated.

I haven’t made a decision yet, but I’m considering a plan.
