Remember last week and my meltdown with my wedding dress? I was having second thoughts about my wedding dress and wasn’t sure if it was the right one.
Through the advice of all of you fabulous girls, I got an overwhelming response of suggestions of what to do! Thank you so much!
The day after I posted my dress dilemma, I made an another appointment at Vera Wang. I thought that my experience this time would be different since I wasn’t going during a sample sale. I was the only one in the bridal salon and knew exactly what I was looking for.
Vera Wang only had one of the two dresses that I could try on.

This is a dress from the Spring 2006 line. They had the same dress that I tried on at the sample sale. Apparently this dress is discontinued so there would be no way of buying one that fit properly (unless I found it on other pre-owned websites.) To be honest, much like the Priscilla of Boston dress, it was wearing me.
I tried on a few more dresses that were nice. I found one much like the one I was originally searching for but the skirt was so full that I don’t know how I was going to walk in it.
I contemplated the thought of buying it but I didn’t want to get in the same predicament that I was already in so I asked if I could take a picture of me in the dress. I needed time to mull over it and being the visual person that I was, I needed a picture to remember what I looked like in the dress. To my surprise, I was not allowed to take a picture. Apparently, you can only take a picture only if you decide to buy the dress. Are you kidding me? How do you expect people to buy dresses if you don’t allow them to take pictures? I was a bit taken aback and turned off to be completely honest. I then asked if I could have the style number or name of the dress and was denied that as well. The wedding consultant basically said that this number wouldn’t do me any good.
I can understand that they don’t want brides going else where to find their dresses but I would be more inclined to buy from them if they let do the things I needed to do to feel comfortable with my purchase.
So that was my second experience with Vera Wang and I’m pretty sure I’ll never be back.
I know this post turned into more of a rant then anything but I have now developed a plan of attack with my wedding dress.
For now, I’m going to stick with my current wedding dress. I have plenty of time to change my mind and will continue to look but at least I know that I have a dress that is beautiful and that looks beautiful on me.
I have learned that a wedding dress is not a piece of taffeta or silk, it’s not the buttons the line that back of the dress or the train that follows you, it’s the way it makes you feel. You make it a wedding dress, it doesn’t make you.

I feel your pain. I was/am the girl of a thousand dresses. I was determined to have a designer dress only because I really thought that the fabric, the craftsmenship would be worth the sample sale price tag. I tried on hundreds of sample sale dresses and everything in between. After purchasing a dress I was pressured in to and realizing right away that I had made the wrong choice, when I slipped on a Watters dress it was all about the way it made me feel. I wasn’t thinking “I could change the top a little” or “tuck a bit back here”. My face was flush and hot; that was the dress.
The Vera dress is gorgeous; her work is so elegant and feminine. However I think that the rueshing on the side is incredibly difficult to pull off . There’s a lot of dress there.
It is indeed all about how it makes you feel.

I’m sorry you felt like they were being hard to get along with, but IME that’s pretty normal. I was never given a style # or allowed to take pictures at any of the salons I went too. I snuck a few and I did find the style # of one, but it didn’t help me find the dress online. They do these things because they want you to buy their dress. I’m a little surprised that you weren’t told the name because that’s fairly easy to find out on your own. Oh well, now you know what you want to do with your dress.

All of the places I have been have had the same no-pictures-til-you-buy-it policy (though one was very nice and let me take pictures during a trunk show that happened while my mom was in the hospital and unable to come or pull up the store’s webcam). I’ve only not gotten style numbers from one place, though. I think it’s great you’re taking your time to think this one out. Can’t wait to see what you decide :)

way to go! whether or not it is standard operating procedure, it is still not customer friendly. i wouldnt want to give my business to an establishment who treated me like that either!

I have had the same experience, of not being allowed to take pictures, at every single “high-end” bridal shop I’ve been too - not just the designer ones. It’s disheartening for sure.
I’m sure you’ll find the right dress for you.
I found the no pictures allowed rule at some of the shops I went to. I too didn’t understand why they wouldn’t let you take a picture. Especially if it’s just one to see what you look like in it.

The place where I got my dress had a strict no-pictures rule, which I agree, is stupid. I got around it since my mom was in NC and I was in Alabama, I went to the dress place alone the first time and told them I’d have to show her the pictures to decide. Shops should realize that lots of people decide against bridal stores based on how they are treated there, I bet they lose more business that way than they would by letting people know what style a dress is.

Hey Abby,
I’m not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing (I know we all want one of a kind dresses!) but I wanted to share this with you anyway. Your firs post came just one week before I was supposed to go dress shopping (begrudgingly, I am just not a bridal gown person, more of a white Oscars gown sorta gal). Well, I was SO inspired by how amazingly gorgeous you looked in the BCBG dress, and what it does for your already kickin’ body, that I had to try it on when I went dress shopping (it doesn’t hurt that a friend of mine works for the company too).
It turns out, it was the right dress for me too. I bought it there on the spot and haven’t looked back. Thanks to you. :)
So take that as you will, but I just wanted to send a testament to how great you look in that dress. All that said, it is your choice to wear whatever makes your heart sing on your wedding day. But the BCBG looked so good on you that it made me go “Damn! I gotta get me one o’ THOSE!” - and I’m not sure if I was talking about the dress. ;)
Love,
Maddie
I just found out from a friend that its sometimes the designers that won’t allow the bridal shops to take pictures because they don’t want them posted on the internet in case they look bad on the brides.
yaayyyy!! I have been thinking about you lots, hoping that you would at the very least, give yourself some time!! I still think the BCBG dress is gor-geous, and I am secretly (or not!) hoping to one day see wedding pictures with you wearing it!! The uptight bridal salons were so against my wedding mantra, I never stepped foot into one! I bought a simple Nicole Miller sheath on ebay, and haven’t looked back since… ok, that’s not totally the truth, I did find an amazing BCBG dress (short, totally NOT a wedding dress), which I ended up buying for the rehearsal!! Can’t wait to see how it all turns out!!
You guys are amazing!! I can’t say it enough. I think my next step is to get a real kicking veil! I’m thinking of a short bubble veil to really spice it up. Let me know if you know of any great places to get a veil from!

Abby, it’s a shame they didn’t let you try on the dress!! However, I agree with other commenters - you looked smashing in your original dress. I definitely do think it’s bridal enough. :)
I feel lucky in that I only ended up going to two places to shop for a wedding dress, both high end salons, and both had no problems with letting me take pictures, writing down the style numbers or anything else I requested. I had no idea you couldn’t even take pictures until reading these comments! It’s too bad you moved from San Francisco, one of the ones that was so awesome to me was down in Los Gatos!
I had a crap experience at Vera Wang too. Actually, the staff was nice, but the dresses were all very fitted throughout the midsection and ALL strapless (I was looking for a non-strapless, A-line gown). Maybe I’m not fashion forward enough but I just didn’t get the whole VW mania. Or maybe I just don’t have the right body for her stuff. Either way, I was glad I didn’t fall in love with something I couldn’t afford!!
