A Honeymoon, Some Lanterns, and Hair Candy

With four months to go, we’re moving full steam ahead! Here’s a post to catch you all up on what’s been happening in my neck of the woods.

After a long debate and many nights of arguments ending in “harumpf!”, we booked our tickets to Japan for our honeymoon. We plan to spend 10 days, half of them in Tokyo, half of them in Kyoto. (For anyone who is researching honeymoons, the ladies and gents of EAD suggested some fabulous locales in this post!) The honeymoon, by far, has produced the most amount of conflict in our relationship out of any other aspect in the planning process. We weren’t seeing eye to eye on many things.

Mostly I was getting stressed out about our dollar not stretching in more expensive cities that he wanted to visit, and I really did not want to stay in hostel-like conditions on our honeymoon to compensate for high airfare prices. He finally swayed me by promising no hostel-like conditions (still to be determined where we’ll stay…), sending me a ramen guide from the NY Times, and noting that I would get to 1. visit the Studio Ghibli Museum, 2. see some Hiroshige prints that I studied in college, and 3. be surrounded in kawaii. I started to get excited too, despite all the arguing and hair that was pulled. Maybe I’ll see you there Abby!

We chose lanterns! We decided to do all three colors and one print. Thank you to Abbie for the suggestion, and to everyone who contributed their opinions. I think they are going to look really pretty over the dance floor.

I won’t be wearing a veil and have been searching for a fun hair accessory to add to my hair. I knew when I saw Handle and Spout’s cute hair pins that they would be perfect for our colorful, casual wedding. I just purchased the seafoam hair pin sets for my sisters, and the pink set for myself. At $35 a set, they were much more budget friendly than some of the fabric flowers or feather hair pieces I have also been drooling over.

Whew-we still have a long way to go, but we’re getting there! Summer brides–how are you doing with your planning?

we heart your comments!
  1. Thank for the lantern post! I just reached my 6 month mark and am starting to pull together the details too. I actually just had my hair/make up trial.

    Congrats on booking your honeymoon!

  2. Great honeymoon choice and I love LOVE the hair candy! It will look perfect on you!

  5. how exciting! you are going to *love* being surrounded by kawaii … :) you guys can’t miss kinkakuji (the golden temple) in kyoto … while you are near kyoto you should definitely go to kobe (it’s one of my favorite cities in japan) we also love the tokyu hands shopping store and *any* shopping in japan is sooooo fun… mujirushi http://www.muji.com/ is another must see store … and all the boutique stores are soooo fabulous … they have *great* little polaroid cameras in very odd sizes … also there are cities that have kept the old architecture … we loved going to Takayama .. you have to stay in traditional japanese hotel … a ryokan … and you have to do an onsen somewhere… and oh my favorite is getting the plethora of snacks at conbini’s … the convenient stores! … email me if you have questions … it’s been a while but I’ll share with you everything I can remember. :) oh the food .. the food is amazing… i love to eat korean food in japan … spanish food in japan … and pastries oh yum! they really do such a great job with giving their japanese twist to food from other countries. you are going to have an amazing time! {katrina}

  6. oh and a note about how to avoid jet lag … when we leave from the west coast (i don’t know where you live) we usually arrive in Japan in the evening … so i try to stay up the *whole* flight so that way when we get there and finally get to our hotel or friends place we are completely tired and sleep all night (which is our day) … if you do that you will kind of trick your body into thinking it’s really night.

    when we come back we get into the west coast in the morning so i try to sleep as much as possible on the plane ride back so i feel rested when i arrive and then do my very very best not to nap during the day so i get over the jet lag faster.

    it’s a little trick that has worked with all our travels to japan and other time zones. :)

    hope that helps!

  7. one more thing… depending on how many days you are gong to be there and how many miles you will cover … you may want to buy a gaijin pass … i think you have to buy the pass while you are in the states (from a japanese travel agency) if I remember right you purchase state side and redeem your pass at Narita airport… you buy it for a predetermined amount of time and like 7 days or 14 days and you can the pass for a lot of the subway and train routes and the bullet train (shinkansen) too … i think it works on any JR routes. if you are going to be traveling a lot it’s really helpful and will save you a lot of money. which is helpful because it’s really expensive to travel in japan…. :) {katrina}

    @Sedona Bride: Wow! Thank you so much for all of the tips Katrina! We are so excited about the food, the shopping, the ryokan experience (we’re looking to stay in one in Kyoto.) I had read about Tokyo Hands and am excited to go there too. And tons of funky polaroid cameras? How cool!

    I get terrible jet lag, perhaps if I bring a few good books I can manage to stay awake the entire flight! I’m typically the one wide awake after the flight while the boy is fast asleep. Thanks again!
