How do you decorate giant black boards?

As I mentioned in a previous post about our venue, the reception area has enormous black boards that I am determined to somehow decorate or tie in with the wedding. The venue normally uses the boards for golf tournaments and posts things on them, but they look like chalkboards (imagine my excitement when I first saw them and thought of the possibilities of giant chalkboards!). They are made of wood though and are huge and there are three of them. Everyone keeps trying to tell me that they will ‘disappear’ at night and no one will notice them, but I do. To me, they feel like blank canvases, waiting for something to be done to them.

This is the largest of the boards. We plan on having an 8ft long dessert/cake/candy table in front of this one, but you can see how large it is! Fortunately they have beautiful scrolls on the top that can act as hooks or a holder for a dowel.

My first idea for these boards was to do a ribbon wall behind the dessert table. I fell in love with this picture!

My mom and I went to the best place we knew of to buy ribbon, Ribbons and Lace in Mesa. They have a huge selection of ribbon and the prices aren’t too bad, but for the amount of space we needed to cover, this just wasn’t a logical choice.

Then I came across this idea:

Hanging-Mason-Jars

I love the look of mason jars. I’ve used them a few times before at showers I’ve hosted and for decorating in the house. They are very inexpensive…we got a dozen at WalMart for about $8. It was decided that we would buy mason jars in varying sizes and hang them similar to this in front of the black boards. It will add enough interest, but not accentuate the boards too much.

Then, I found a tutorial on how to paint the jars to look like the turquoise vintage jars! Its so simple, just use Mod Podge (I used the regular kind that Hobby Lobby had) and food coloring.

A couple of my bridesmaids came over one night and we painted away! In the light, the jars look blotchy and not good, but once a second coat is put on and it dries completely they looked better. (It is very important to be patient with this project because Modge Podge goes on solid, but dries opaque/transparent.) Then, I took a dried one with two layers, put a candle in it and held it up against a dark backdrop with low light. I love it! The texture is actually better than a completely clear glass because you won’t see the candle as well. We bought wire that has a brown raffia like twine around it and found another tutorial on the same site about how to hang them. I love the outcome of this!

Any other ideas on how I could decorate these black boards?

we heart your comments!
  1. Love the blue mason jars! I’ve also seen a post about painting them with glass paint (http://amountainbride.blogspot.com/2009/06/diy-make-vintage-mason-jars-seriously.html), but the Mod Podge and food coloring looks great, and I’m sure it’s much cheaper. Have you thought about glow in the dark chalk for the black boards? Not sure how if it would look too neon, but it might look neat with the ‘blackout’ effect once it gets dark.

  2. One idea would be to use it as a guest sign-in and have your photographer take pictures at the end of the night of all the notes your family/friends left you.

  3. Thanks, great ideas! Unfortunately the black boards are not chalk boards (I know, how awesome would that be!). We actually found an online resource for wholesale ribbon, so it looks like we will be able to do the ribbon wall! I am so excited to see how it turns out. :)

I love the ribbon wall idea–have you seen hanging frames? That would also be very fun.

  5. The ribbon is by far my favorite! To make it more affordable, why not use fabric? Just the cheap stuff at JoAnns would be good…just cut up long strips of it and staple it to a dowel. If you want it a bit more vintage you can fray the edges just a bit.
I tried the paint-your-own-mason-jar thing with glass paint and it did NOT turn out well…and it was rather time consuming so to do a bunch would be a pain in the butt. The modge podge sounds (and looks!) way better!

  6. Thanks Juel! Not sure if you saw my comment above, but we were able to find affordable ribbons so we are doing the ribbon wall, yay! We ordered the ribbon last night, I’m so excited because it fits the look we are going for. :) Sorry the glass painted jars didn’t turn out. :( I’d highly recommend using the modge podge! I jus had a few bmaids come over and help and we finished in two nights (and it was fun to get together!). Really you can’t mess up with the modge podge and I like that it gives it a more translucent appearance than totally see-through. Hope the modge podge works out for you!

  7. I love the venue you are getting married at – and the first time I saw the black boards – I knew there would be endless options. The ribbons look beautiful – and LOVE the mason jars!!!!! Make sure that you have plenty of people to help you get this look installed before you start getting ready for your big day. I have had numerous clients who did not plan enough time for decorating before the wedding – and then they felt rushed getting ready – It is your special day…..Enjoy every minute of it – and deligate, deligate, deligate —- Best of Luck – would love to see additional pictures of your event. I would also bring a iron or steamer incase the ribbons get wrinkled during transport!!!!

  8. I love what you’ve done here! All of these ideas look so good already! the only other thing I can think of is having someone really artistic draw on the blackboard with colored chalk!

  14. I think these are so creative. I was thinking that adding some beads to the wire would be nice too. I will have to try this. Thank you for the wonderful ideas.
