Dinner Party on the Beach

It’s not often I get to share a party that I was not only lucky enough to style, but also lucky enough to attend! So naturally, I’m especially excited to share today’s dinner party on the beach. The celebration? My lovely friend Jenna of That Wife‘s 30th birthday! The setting? One of the most picturesque places in the Bay Area, the Carmel City Beach. We set out to create a celebration with florals that complemented the natural seaside landscape, a healthy dose of metallics, and a bit of a Middle Eastern flair. We had such fun choosing flowers from the wholesale market and arranging them in a mismatched vessels that we collected from Home Goods and local thrift stores. Gorgeous pale green and copper chargers, rose gold flatware, and Moscow mule mugs set the table, which was completed with wooden bench seating, all from Classic Party Rentals. Sand-colored linens and a patterned runner from Napa Valley Linens echoed the beach setting. Pretty pops of Jenna’s favorite color, kelly green, were peppered throughout, including on the gorgeous calligraphy place cards from JM Paper & Ink and serving trays from Anthropologie. We all had the best time getting glammed up by Dolce Vita Beauty and putting on our pretty frocks for a fabulous party, which concluded with blankets and a bonfire on the beach. It’s so wonderful to relive these wonderful memories in the beautiful images from Majesta Patterson!

Looks so fun love the lighting, kind of spooky foggy? One question- why would a party have place cards for 6 people ?

Hi Ginny! Thanks! Yes – it was a very moody afternoon on the beach! There were 14 of us, and the place cards were just a fun little detail. :)

Hi Hallie and happy Tuesday! We loved how the pretty pattern on the chargers and trays, as well as some of the sweet treats we enjoyed, evoked a bit of that feel.

Thanks Jordan! Isn’t Carmel just gorgeous – it was my first time visiting and I fell in love!

There were 14 guests but 6 place cards? Like the others mentioned I too am missing the middle eastern part. It also seems like a set- not an actual party. Seems very try hard rather than an actual celebration of an actual cherished person. Photos of the meal would have probably helped- all in all comes off as way too staged and forced rather than a natural and beautiful celebration, which is a shame as there was a lot of potential there.

Hi Amy and thanks for stopping by! Yes there were place cards for everyone, but there were multiple trays and only 6 fit on this one. The pretty patterns on the serving pieces and chargers added a tiny bit of detail without it being too over the top. We had such fun bringing this party to life and loved spending time with friends after the event was pulled together!

Hi Squeen! Bay Area weather in the summer is a fickle thing. It was a bit cloudy but not too cold!

Aw, thanks Stephanie! I loved that Modcloth dress – super comfy! Majesta did an amazing job capturing, love the combo of film images + cloudy day.

So much fun to see your styling (and friends) Ami! Lovely design, coordination, photography — obviously great teamwork all around. Wish we had beaches in Tennessee :) Congrats on a stunning event.

  4. Gorgeous! You, Jenna, the beach, the party, the details. Next time I’m party crashing! xoxoxo

It was a pretty perfect day and having you there would have been the only thing that could have made it any better! Hugs!

Wait, is it a wedding or a dinner party? I’m confused … I’m also not seeing “Middle Eastern,” really. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that pink color, but all the beige (and, I’m afraid to say, the bride) kinda blend into the background so the pictures are …. well. Drab, to put it kindly. Regardless, they say rain on your wedding day is good luck! Wishing everyone many happy years :-)

(And the dog in the bowtie basically wins the internet for today. I DIE. SO CUTE.)

Hi Rachel! This was not a wedding, it was a dinner party for my lovely friend Jenna’s 30th birthday. There are lots of fun elements that could be pulled into a wedding however!

And my lovebug pup thanks you for the sweet words! :)

  6. This is stunning!! It makes me want to gather my nearest and dearest and head to the beach! Oh and your pup is just too cute! And how well behaved?? Mine would have been running riot! :) x

Thanks Amy! Yes, he is a little angel. He was so happy to play on the beach and hang out with everyone!

I think people forget that these are detail shots (a set of placecards)… not “entire scene of everything” shots (every single placecard)! The details are beautiful and they tie together a fun decorative theme without being over the top. I am always impressed when people do their own floral arranging – I try and it never looks quite right! The pops of color really stand out in the photography and they’re beautiful. The pinks tie in well with the birthday girl’s dress (and yours!).

    • Ami writes...

Thanks Kristin! That shade of pink is my very favorite. DIY flowers are a fun little adventure, and always makes me really appreciate the pros. :)

    • Ami writes...

Thank you Sarah! Jenna is a sweetheart. It was such fun to plan and celebrate this with her!

  8. I think you might be better served by saying it’s Mediterranean inspired instead of Middle Eastern. I get where you are going with the floor pillows and lanterns, etc but given Jenna’s love of Greece and the lighter color palette a Mediterranean theme would be better interpreted ;-)

  9. looks like a lovely party – if a bit chilly! Maybe it should be obvious to me but did you have 2 tables to seat all the guests as the beautifully dressed one there only looks like it has six settings. And on that note, what food did you eat?

    • Ami writes...

Hi Rachel! Yes, we had two tables and they were both the same design. Carmel City Beach does not allow catering, so a family friend cooked us up some amazing food, we had some yummy Middle Eastern candies, and Jenna made a fabulous cheesecake! XO
