Modern + Sophisticated Denver Wedding

April and Michael’s intimate wedding at Denver’s Halcyon Hotel is full of classic and modern touches! The Halcyon is a cozy boutique hotel, and their 68 guests were a perfect fit, ensuring that the couple could celebrate and chat with each of their closest family and friends throughout the evening. April selected a timeless, slim-fitting Nicole Miller gown from BHLDN, accentuating with a veil handmade by A Busy Mother and pretty pink Badgley Mischka shoes. Her bouquet by The Flower House Denver featuring snowy white blooms accentuated with anemones for a pop of black. Centerpieces of textured flowers, succulents, metallic elements, and lots of dreamy candles accentuated the reception ballroom at the Halcyon, with its dramatic dark details. Each detail is pure sophistication, captured beautifully by Tamara Gruner Photography!

How did you meet?
It was just like the movies. Michael had sunglasses on (at night), and I had on a ski vest and rabbit ears. It was Halloween weekend 2006, in Fort Collins, CO where we both were attending college. Amongst the crowds, we traded stories and flirted the whole evening. We hugged goodnight with a proper first date (coffee of course) planned for the next day. From that Halloween on, we’ve been side by side, best friends lucky to be in love. We’ve celebrated, cried, laughed, learned, and loved through all of the hardest and best parts of life for the last eleven years.

What is your proposal story?
In July of 2016, Michael asked me to meet him at Union Station in downtown Denver. The recently restored and remodeled train station-turned-heart-of-the-city, with it’s restaurants, cocktail bars, and hotel, holds a special place in my heart. My maternal grandparents (who are now gone) met there many years ago, my grandfather picking my grandmother up at the train station so that he could marry his longtime girlfriend before he was shipped overseas with the Air Force. Knowing this, Michael led me to the back of Union Station, where the trains still pull up. Down on one knee on a busy Friday evening, with strangers cheering and taking pictures, he simply said “April, will you marry me?” And I, stunned and bright red in the face, could only nod yes. Champagne at a special reserved table, a wonderful dinner, and phone calls ensued while our newest adventure started, our engaged to be married life. We had a room reserved in the boutique hotel for the night and Michael had placed every card I had written him for the last ten year (a LOT of cards, I didn’t know he kept them all!) on all surfaces of the room, with a new card celebrating our engagement on the table.

What was the most important to the two of you while planning? Was there anything that you chose to splurge on or skip?
We placed a lot of value in finding a venue that fit our wishes, both aesthetically and logistically, and keeping all details in line with our desire for a a romantic, intimate, cozy evening was most important. We kept that in mind with our colors, wedding size, food and dessert choices, music, all aspects. We identified the most important pieces of our wedding to us as photography, location, and flowers and spent less on guest number, as well as having an off-season wedding, not having a bridal party (so all of our guests could have fun being guests!), and not having wedding favors. All of our vendors were AMAZING. Our sweet photographer, who also shot our engagement photos, was so warm, professional, incredibly talented, and easy to work with. She beautifully captured every detail and made us feel at ease. We are thrilled to have worked with her and have these precious mementos.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?
Remember and relish in the joy that a wedding, and more importantly, a marriage brings. To us, joy means a hug and kiss first in the morning and last in the evening. Joy is the eternal and immediate comfort we find in holding hands and the knowledge that this is my person, no matter what, for always.
