Wheat Field Inspiration

Wrapping up a week in weddingregionalism posts, I was trying to think of something romantic, carefree, and unique to post about.  Don’t ask me why, but I thought of a wheat field and a wedding centered around this theme.  I think I’ve always pictured wheat fields to be very romantic, with wide open expanses and ocean-like movements with the breeze.  Wouldn’t it be picturesque?  Here’s what I came up with:

Top row: Wheat field and barn photoPolly’s Cakes, Brides
Second row: Center piece photo from uptowngirl, Wheat and lavender bouquet, Short yellow dress
Bottom row: Lemonade photo and recipe, Wedding dress by Carolina Herrera, Sandals, Lavender and wheat boutonniere from twigs & honey

I’m imagining a bride living somewhere in a bread basket state that is a free spirit, but not wanting to overdo the farm theme. Just light and airy design elements with a good balance between structured and relaxed.

Find all things great in your own backyard!

Okay, so not literally, but today’s post is carrying on a week of weddingregionalism posts and I pulled together an inspiration board for an Oregon wedding that uses all things Oregon. Every photo in the board relates to either Oregon or unique services or designs available in the state. Just a bit of inspiration to show you that it can be done. Why don’t you try with you city of choice? Help your local artisans and also employ some weddingregionalism by choosing themes that match your region of choice.

Before pulling this board together, I was thinking of something special that Oregon has to offer. Berries! A great climate for growing Marionberries, blueberries, and anything else essentially berry, I thought I’d loosely design a wedding around this delicious fruit without going over the top Violet Beauregarde of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (when she inflates into a blueberry after chewing that special gum).

Second row: Ink & Peat flower arrangement, Lark Press wedding invitation

Are there local resources or products you’ve used as inspiration for your event?

DIY!

Calling all Crafty and Creative Brides

I love thinking up fun and inventive ways to spruce up your wedding, make it fun for guests, and keep it affordable. I randomly had this DIY inspiration about how to handle the tricky task of assigning seats for your single guests. It’s hard enough to seat couples and family, but single friends can be trickier as you don’t want them to feel left out and you don’t want them to be seated as the lowly single among a table of parents and children. This may be a bit quirky and offbeat, but I think it would be fun and adventurous if you have open minded single friends

For this quick and easy project, purchase two birdhouses either on a stand or the kind you can hang. On a skinny roll of paper, write table numbers and seating numbers in a random order. Use one birdhouse for the guys and the other, for the ladies. Place the roll inside with a portion hanging out. Let your single friends know ahead of time that seating will be determined the wedding day and have an obvious sign to direct them. Then, let the intermingling and fun begin! That wasn’t too hard, right? After the wedding, you can use the birdhouses in your backyard and create a nice haven for the birds which ties in with the weddingregionalism theme of this week and a lasting memory of your big day. I’m all about dual purpose ideas!

Desert Inspiration

Recently, a bride I have been working with for her hair piece mentioned that her wedding will take place in a rather unique location. The desert. Not the typical wedding location choice, but the more I thought of it, the more I began to think how fantastic the idea was! Doesn’t it just sound a bit adventurous in the Lawrence of Arabia kind of way? I thought it would be a great way to also address my weekly theme of weddingregionalism (see Sunday’s blip for an explanation).

Seeing that there are so many unique climates and environments around the U.S. and the world of course, why not cater your wedding around that unique region? Play up the native vegetation, colors, and tastes. It would be impractical to make everything region specific, but to pick a few elements is pretty easy to do. If you have the ability to do so, pick locally grown foods to serve to your guests (helping local farmers!), colors that suite the mood of your location, plants found in the region, etc. I’ve pulled together an inspiration board for a desert wedding that is “fresh” and appropriate.

Second row: Center piece from our wedding displaying some easy to care for succulents and other plants (photo credits: Paul Rich Studio), Short and colorful dress from Anthropologie, Parasol from Pamela’s Parasols
Third row: Invitation from Wedding Paper Divas, Linen-silk dress from J. Crew, Cold sangria, recipe available at Whats 4 Eats

I’d probably recommend not saying, “I do” in the middle of summer for a desert wedding, but be sure to provide shade, beverages, and wear breezy, lightweight attire!

Local Designers and the Dress

To kick off my weddingregionalism week of posts, I’d like to discuss local designers and artisans. I’m going to start off with what I know and that is Portland, OR. Anything I do with this city can be applied to your own city/hometown and I hope you might come away with some inspiration!

Guest blogger :: Myra Callan

My name is Myra Callan and in the not so distant past (9-8-07) I got married to my love, Matt on a sunny and warm day in Gervais, OR. During the planning process for our wedding, I was completely inspired by the wedding world and all its high energy and latest fashion trends and ideas. After all the dust settled and I became a Mrs., I continued to be interested in the wedding industry in general and upon the encouragement of friends, family, and wedding professionals, decided to try my hand at becoming a contributor to the wedding world. I had long created hair accessories for myself, and decided that would be the path I would take for what has become quite the whirlwind experience. Having majored in the sciences and Geography, upon finishing grad school I worked a full time job as a Research Analyst for Forecasting for a couple years. At the end of January 2008, I launched twigs & honey : hair adornments, design, embellishments through the growing site, Etsy.com. With my first sale in the same week, things continued to snowball for the next couple months until I realized, I couldn’t maintain both a day job and my nightly twigs & honey job. As of a couple weeks ago, I’m now self employed and busier than ever with my fledging line.
