DIY Entry #7: Compass Escort Cards

Victoria submitted these positively lovely compass escort cards.

To reflect our wedding’s vintage inspiration, my fiance’s career as a Naval Aviator, and my career as a writer, we created these compass escort cards. The idea of a compass, however, can be appropriate to any bride’s wedding, as the compasses reflect the idea of a guest “finding” his or her seat.

Unique Wedding Inspiration: Part II

I’ve had SO much fun this week posting on unique wedding ideas–I hope you’ve found them inspiring! It’s time now for my final post on unique inspirations for your wedding. Enjoy!

A Letter (i.e. your soon-to-be last name; or your first name if you and your fiance share the first letter of your names): Think outside the monogram for this one. If your fiance’s last name begins with P, for example, serve foods that start with the letter P (pumpkin; pie; pear; pork; prawns; pasta…); include scrabble tiles or typewriter keys in the letter P with your invitations or save the date cards; dress your bridesmaids in the color purple; and use peonies for your centerpieces.

Unique Wedding Inspirations

For my final day of posting, it’s all about where to find unique inspiration for your wedding (or, you could call it “themes”). I’ll always love beach weddings, holiday-themed weddings, and vintage weddings (my own wedding’s theme!), but there are SO many more ideas out there. Here are a few things I came up with to inspire you:

A Painting: Theme your wedding around a painting. Make sure to include a print/postcard of the work in your invitation or save the date card, so guests know this is the inspiration for your event. The painting below, for example, is The Singing Butler by Jack Vettriano. Ideas: Have your wedding on the beach by the ocean, have your bridesmaids dress in red dresses and your men in black tuxes. Take photographs with black umbrellas. Design your save the dates/invitations using this photo, or take your own photo of you dancing with you fiance on the beach. Design your decor around the idea of Old Elegance, in black, red and beige. This painting is truly elegance mixed with joy!

Unique Engagement Photo Locations

I love looking at unusual engagement photos! Here are some great ideas using images by Canadian wedding photographer Claire Cocheme:

  1. In the Rain: While rain may be completely unwelcome on your wedding day, engagement photos in the rain can be spectacular. Play with movement, light and colorful umbrellas.

Unique Save the Date Ideas

Save the Date cards have become extremely common, as most brides have at least a few guests who have to fly in for the wedding. The Save the Date card is the first thing your guests will see about your wedding–don’t settle for something run-of-the-mill. Here are some ideas:

Scrabble: Spell out your save the date card on a scrabble board. Include the words “Save the Date”, names, wedding date and city, and your wedding website. Take a photo and mail prints as your save the date card!
