Organize: Storage Bins

We have this huge bookshelf that holds our collection of paper and printing supplies.  From Gocco to letterpress, it’s all on this one piece of furniture.  As our living room has been turned into our studio, this is the first thing guests see when walking into our home.  I really don’t like how messy and cluttered it looks.  Clearing out supplies is not an option, as we need everything on the shelf for our business.

Solution?  Storage Bins!  I have been pondering these bins for over a year but have been unable to commit to one look.  Sad, I know.  But I don’t want to invest in these bins if I’m going to hate it in two years.  We need several of them.

If I had enough money, we would have purchased a few of these monroe bins from West Elm.

West Elm

But…they’re out of our price range at $49 each, and a little too fancy for storing craft supplies.

Container Store

These fabric bins are a mere $9.99 but are too casual and flimsy for the shelf.

Ikea

These are the perfect size and shape, yet I hate the colors.  Yet at $3.99 I may be convinced that the blue isn’t all bad.

Ikea

Bingo!  At $9.99, they’re cheap enough not to panic when ink splatters inside.  They’re big enough to hold paper, and they look like they’ll last a couple of years until I get sick of the color!

we heart your comments!

I like that they have lids. That way if the contents in the cube look a little cluttered (or accidently get that way) no one will know! And you wont have stuff peeking over the top – I have been known to overfill bins! I might have to look into these myself. Thanks for the tip!

We bought those ones from Ikea. We bought them in a pretty plum/magenta color. I need a bigger storage bin to store our blankets and quilts. Am loving these ones from CB2 http://www.cb2.com/family.aspx?c=598&f=4077

Aren’t these bins just the bane of your existence? All the pretty ones cost an arm and a leg, and who can justify spending that much on STORAGE? And of course all the affordable ones are usually dog ugly. You found some good ones, though. Great size, too! You’ll have to let us know how they hold up! I’m always dubious when it comes to Ikea…

I really like the ones from The Container Store. Thanks for posting this.

Storage has become the bane of my existence. As much as I love the decorative bins, my craft tools have grown exponentially and I use clear plastic ones. I need the clear ones to see what’s inside. Ikea has clear bins that allow you to place caddies inside. I put my most used tools in the caddies. Best part is that they are very cheap.
