Craft: Patchwork Decoupage Canvas

Inspired by this project by Chris Glass, I give you my DIY Patchwork Decoupage Canvas.  It takes about an hour to complete, and costs $10 to $20.

Materials Needed:

  • 16″x20″ blank canvas (or other size)
  • 20-4″x4″ squares of decorative paper
  • Modge Podge
  • Foam Brush
  • Bone Folder
  • Scissors or Paper Cutter

Step One: Gather all your supplies in one spot.

Step Two:  Arrange the squares in the pattern you would like.  This takes a bit of time as you may end up not liking the combination of paper you’ve picked.  If you are detail oriented and want all lines to be perfectly straight, you can mark off lines on your canvas to create perfect 4″x4″ squares.

The original layout had too much brown, so I ended up choosing a much larger 8″x8″ piece of paper to provide a focal point.

Much better!

Step Three: Gather up the pieces in an order you’ll remember and begin painting the back of each piece with Modge Podge.  Place the pieces in the desired order on the canvas.  Smooth out air bubbles and edges with a bone folder (or other straight edge).  Be careful not to peel up the corners of each square.

Step Four:  Let the canvas dry overnight.  Glue down any curled up edges.  Coat with two layers of Modge Podge, letting the first layer dry for 15 minutes.  Let the canvas dry, and then hang in a prominent spot!

Voila!  Crafting on the cheap, just how I like it.  It’s perfect for the empty wall just above my craft table.

we heart your comments!

I love this idea! This is a great way to use all of the extra paper scraps I have that are too pretty to throw away!

Love canvas and love this idea! This is a great way to recycle :)

I love working on canvas and I am hoping of doing one with decorative tissues for my kitchen :)
