Decor: A marriage of styles

I know firsthand that one of the obstacles you may face after getting married is setting up a home together and marrying your styles.  Chris and I have lived together for a little over 2 years now, so it’s getting easier, but our styles and what we consider important in our home are still very different.

For example, this is one of 5 pictures we have hanging in our office:

Dogs playing poker.  I would never in a million years have picked this out.  But, they are something that he got from his grandfather, and they are important to him.

In our bedroom, we decided to use mostly my furniture that I had since it was nicer.  But problems arose when I found out that he didn’t really like my duvet cover because it was too “heavy” on his feet.  He was always kicking it off his feet, it would end up twisted and messy.  And while it being too heavy on his feet bothered him, letting it end up in a crumpled mess on the floor bothered me.  So, since we couldn’t agree, and my duvet cover has seen better days, it was time for compromise.  And I can’t tell you that I was upset at getting to pick out something new!

In this post I am going to share with you the before pictures of our bedroom (well, what it looks like now), and the new fabric that we’re using to change it.

Another thing that is really important to Chris is this painting by his grandmother:

Using this painting as a starting point, as well as the existing wall color, I decided to look for a fabric in gold tones to compliment the frame as well as the color on the walls.  And after several different swatches, this is the fabric I found:

It is a large scaled pattern from Kravet, and it’s actually more of a ’straw’ color than gold.  Rather than spend a fortune and drape it all over my room, I decided to highlight it by recovering my headboard and making a bed skirt with it.  We’ll keep the bedding (and new ‘lighter’ duvet cover) neutral in whites and creams.

Here is a few pictures of our bedroom now, as it is, (messy and all…):

A couple more things that we’d like to address is skirting the TV stand (’cuz it’s not very pretty), and maybe hanging some curtains up over the doorway to our bathroom. Yes, as of right now, we don’t have any doors separating our room from our bathroom.

And here’s a kind of preview of the new fabric on the headboard:

So stay tuned for the next step: recovering our headboard and making a new bed skirt!

With these new changes, we’re both happy with our “new” bedroom!  It just takes a little compromise.

we heart your comments!
