While listening to WUNC (our local NPR station) a while back, I heard about this blog, Our Farm Adventure.  The blog tells the story of Laura and Ben, two self-proclaimed nerds with a dream of building an earthen home, starting a farm, and living off the grid.  If you’re thinking of going green or just want to read about those who are working towards doing so, check out their blog.  Also, they’re getting married in May 2010, so wish them well!

They also talked about a couple in Durham, Stephen and Rebekah Hren, who strive to make the smallest carbon footprint they can.  First they built a house out in the country and were really off the grid.  They really enjoyed their acreage, but they had wicked commutes.  They decided it was time for a plan B and bought a 1930s era cottage in Durham, NC, which they seriously modified.  They’ve taken it off the power grid too.

While working on both houses, they learned that the things they wanted to do were not commonly done.  They decided it was high time for a go-to resource to exist – and they wrote it.  If you share their dream or just want some tips about green remodeling, check it out:  “The Carbon-Free Home: 36 Remodeling Projects to Help Kick the Fossil-Fuel Habit” (Chelsea Green Publishing/2008).
