Decorating tips

Truly talented designers are so creative, and they can come up with ideas and tricks to make your house look like a million bucks.  But here are a few tips and tricks you can use yourself.

  • If you’re not sure what colors go with each other, or how to combine several shades, pick one color you love and go monochromatic!  It’s easy and looks so modern!!  Add neutrals like white and black to ground the scheme and you’re all set!

  • Group items of similar color or style together to form a “collection”.

  • Paint is cheap.  Use it to color your walls, your furniture, your lamps, or even stencil a pattern on some fabric for draperies!  Mis-matched garage sale/hand-me-down/thrift store furniture can look like it was all meant to go together if it’s painted matching or co-ordinating shades.

  • Consider the sight-lines of your rooms.  If one room opens up into another, or you can see into it clearly, choose colors that will be harmonious together.

  • Don’t match everything.  Variety is the spice of life!  Mix fabrics on your bedding, your drapes, your pillows.  They can all be in the same color family, but throw at least one curveball in to keep it interesting.

  • Like the old Domino creed stated: “It’s okay to not be finished!”  Don’t buy something just to “finish” a room unless you really like it.  You’ll end up not liking it and replacing it, which will cost you more money in the long term.  I’m not saying that you must spend lots of money on your things, but if you can’t quite afford the chandelier you love, take the time to save up for it, or find a less expensive one you love just as much.  Don’t just put one up “for now” unless you absolutely have to.   Unless you have just a ton of money to burn, most people assemble their rooms over a little time.
