Unfortunately, we have a plant ledge over our door.  I say “unfortunately” because there’s no way to get up there other than a re-heally tall ladder.  So I’m not sure why they call it a plant ledge – it would be insane to get up there every week or so to water plants.  Anyway, this was one of the first places I identified as a perfect place to display our passion for travel in our home.

Plant ledge - travel decor

As you can see from the close-up above, I used some leather luggage I picked up for a song in an antique shop in Asheville years and years ago.  I slapped some stickers on them (like these from Quincy) to re-create what travelers’ luggage used to look like.  Back in the day, hotels would put their own labels on people’s luggage – advertising for the hotel and bragging rights for the travelers.

I also used a book of maps that my mom picked up for me when a library was getting rid of books, a vintage globe, and a “tin man” to represent all those suits of armor we’ve checked out over the years in various museums.  The replication suit of armor was a Valentine’s Day present for my husband.  Sneaky, turning a decor item into a gift, eh?

Do you have a plant ledge?  If so, what have you done with it?

we heart your comments!
  1. This is a really cool idea and creative use of space! :)

  2. No plant ledge… but I understand why you say “unfortunately”! I can’t imagine climbing up there to water either!
