Decor: A room for much more than a princess

Welcome to the EAD Living blog! We are so excited to have you here. If you are a new visitor, we'd love for you to subscribe to our RSS feed and visit our sister site, EAD Weddings. Thanks for visiting and we hope you come back soon!

A dear friend of mine is contemplating adoption.  Specifically, she and her husband are considering adopting a 5 year old girl and 3 year old boy (siblings).  My friends have the perfect house for kids – and even have to bedrooms ready to be turned into kids’ rooms.  The little girl is very much in love with the color pink and playing princess.  In honor of this little girl, here’s an inspiration board I put together for a room fit for a girl who’s much more than a princess.

Little girl's princess room

Source (clockwise from left top corner): Chandelier – $88 from Gallery802, curtains – $89-129ea from Pottery Barn Kids, accent lamp – $16.99 from Ikea, castle wall decal – $26 from Circle Line Studio at etsy, art print – $12 from Dudadaze at etsy, bedside table – $79.99 from Ikea, table lamp – $29.99 for base from Target, bedding – $207 for 2 shams and full/queen duvet from Pottery Barn Kids.  Quote from Story People.

I’d add this 3 drawer $69.99 chest in birch from Ikea and hack it like Adam’s dresser as shown at Design*Sponge.  I’d go with white paint (I’d do all the furniture in the room white, for that matter) and different fabric – maybe something fun from Amy Butler (below: fresh poppies).  I’d set that little blue accent lamp from above on top of the chest and hang a pretty mirror (below: $76.49 from Target) over it.

I’d pick out two or three more prints from Dudadaze to make a set 3 or 4.

Assuming ownership of a bed frame, mattress, and sheets, this room can be had for less than $1,200* - not bad considering that’s an entire, fully decorated room.  I bet similar items to some of those above can be found for less if you have the time to search for them.

*Not shown: Curtain rods – $11.99 x 2 (Ikea), lamp shade – $10 (estimated), paint – $30 (estimated), frames – $10 x 4 (estimated – watch for sales at Michaels, AC Moore, etc.), fabric – $15 (estimated).

I’ll have a little boy’s room to share with you later today.  If you want me to design something for you, let me know!  I love spending other people’s money.
