I'm so jealous! I studied abroad in Ireland in June/July 2002. It's amazing, you are going to LOVE it. Bring layers. It's chilly in the mornings and evenings, but warms up during the day when the sun is out (I have a ton of photos with a sweater tied around my waist!) I wore clogs and sneakers/tennis shoes almost exclusively. I was in it for practicality, not fashion! :-) I don't recall being uncomfortable at all. HAVE FUN!

Unfortunately, Ireland weather is terribly unpredictable any time of year. Although July gets the most rainfall, the long days also mean you ultimately end up with more hours of sunshine... it's weird Irish math, but it's true.

For most, wellies or waterproof are overkill unless you've got plans for serious hiking...or if you have a pair that both looks good and is comfortable. Weatherproof or water-resistant is a good idea for at least one set of shoes, and don't pack any footwear that risks getting ruined with a step in a puddle or a stroll through some wet grass.

I'm a fan of my all-purpose water-resistant Rockports.

We started a packing list for Ireland travel. However, it's already been pointed out that we are terribly lacking in the women's fashion department. If anyone has something to add, feel free. http://irishfireside.wordpress.com/2009/05/19/pre-trip-checklist/

I have a pair of Montrail trans trail shoes that I wore a lot when hiking in Europe because they are waterproof. They are really comfortable but the problem is they aren't all that 'European'.
Here is the site if you want to take a look:

in my experience, people in Europe don't wear tennis shoes.. so i you dont want to look like a tourist... don't wear em... sadly i can't help with the wet part as when I was in Ireland it didn't rain once... i wore these from sketchers and loved em. http://www.skechers.com/shoes-and-clothing/women/styles/all_shoes/product/sassies/bbk/ they come in many colors too!

While not totally cute (but kinda!), I'd go with duck boots or "bean boots" - leather upper with rubber bottom and toe. Lands End and LL Bean carry them - they are my go-to wet weather shoes!
