500 Square Feet of Living Space

We have lived in our current apartment for a little over a year now and it has been a work in progress the entire time. According to my husband, I move the furniture on a weekly basis. Now that nearly everything has finally found a place in our cramped quarters, we are moving. I thought I would give you a mini tour before everything begins to be taken down, boxed up, and sent across the country. The decor isn’t anything too special but it has many personal touches which have really turned our little place into a home.
Welcome! Come on in.
The living room is filled with many little garage sale and thrift store finds collected during my bargain hunting. The corner cabinet is by far our favorite piece of furniture with its Danish look and hidden, rolling doors. The brown leather chair was picked up on the side of the road for free. It was in pretty bad shape but we repainted and upholstered it so it looks brand new. The large green rug is from Crate & Barrel. I have had houseplants since I was in high school and they have travelled with me and continued to multiply in each new place I call home.
Our couch is small because our space is small. The LOVE letters were made from pieces of recycled glass in a kiln as a gift from my husband. He also constructed the shelf that goes over the wall. With no overhead lighting, lamps are a necessity. The brown lamps were from Crate & Barrel last spring. I am never quite sure what to do with the half wall between the living room and kitchen.
The art piece on the back wall of the kitchen was handmade from metal by a family friend. One of my favorite space saving measures in the kitchen has been the spice jars on the side of the fridge. We both love to cook and they are very conveniently located next to the stove which frees up valuable cupboard space. As you can see from the additional kitchen shelving units, we have a lot of dishes! When the pictures were taken, I was getting ready for company so there were some miscellaneous items on the dining table. I have made several different tablecloths that I interchange depending on my mood. It has proven difficult to find small, square ones in any stores.
I made the duvet using two flat sheets sewn together. One side has the pattern and the other side is solid brown. I had a difficult time finding only flat sheets so I purchased two sheet sets. Now I have extra pillowcases and fabric for other projects too. The bedside lamp is from IKEA and the white frames over the bed are from Target.
What personal touches have you used in your home?

I’m so jealous of your coffee table. That’s exactly the one I’ve been hunting (on and off) for two years, never finding near enough to buy.
The coffee table is a really old family hand-me-down. It was snatched up at a neighbor’s garage sale by an aunt years ago. Then used in two different cousins apartments before being passed on to us!
i LOVE your apartment! it’s so cozy and all of the pictures on the walls make it feel so lived-in.
