Taste the Rainbow

For a friend’s birthday recently, I decided to bake something fun and colorful, just like her.

I first read about the Rainbow Cake phenomenon at Omnomicon (one of my favorite food blogs). Aleta, the author, has an awesome step-by-step tutorial on how to make this cake, so I’m going to refer you to her post if you’d like to make one. I didn’t use her soda method, just used a plain ol’ box of Betty Crocker white cake mix, made according to the package directions. I used about one scant cup of batter per color.

Have I mentioned how much I adore my box of food coloring? It’s far more fun than a box of Crayolas, and I *love* Crayolas (and most other things that appeal to 5-year-olds).

I used purple cream cheese frosting (my friend’s favorite color and type of frosting) and added a little sprinkle monogram for decoration, but you can use any kind of frosting you like.

Like everything I make, I promise this cake is simpler than it looks. The preparation ease to shock value ratio is off the charts!  You should’ve seen her face when she cut into the cake and saw stripey psychedelic colors instead of plain white, yellow, or brown!

we heart your comments!

I have to know! Where’d you get that food coloring!!!

If I could bake, I would surely try this. This is such a cute idea. I bet this would be a hit at kids’ parties.

P.S. I love crayons, too:)

Corey Ann~ I got it at my local kitchen store, but you can get it on Amazon too! Maybe E. can add it to the EAD Amazon store ;)

I love this idea! I’ve been trying to find someone to bake it for- my mother would probably think it’s just strange and Mr P isn’t into rainbows! perhaps I just need to bake it for myself?
