In high school, I took a home economics type class. I made a lop-sided duffle bag and a deformed chocolate chip cookie pillow. I had a such a terrible time making both projects that I didn’t sew again. I’ve always been envious of my friends who can sew.
All the craft shows that I’ve been to in the past year have inspired me. I decided that I wanted to learn/relearn is how to sew with a sewing machine. I want to do basic things like make decorative pillows, maybe some pajamas.
I used trusty Yelp.com to find sewing classes. My search led me to Sew L.A. It’s this hip sewing studio in Silver Lake. It’s definitely not like your grandma’s sewing shop. They teach classes and have a small shop. They carry some great specialty and import fabrics.
Learning to sew was much easier this time around.
After the 1st class, I made this.
The second class was about different stitches and what they are used for. Here are some of my sample stitches.
I’m addicted. I plan to take more classes soon, but the break in my design schedule is almost up. My mind is racing with all the different things I can make. For now, I’m really hoping Santa will bring one of these.
For those that are more experienced with sewing, any tips?

Several times per year I have “I wish I could sew!!” moments. I had one last week when I couldn’t find a reasonably priced (or nice looking) tablecloth for my square table for Thanksgiving. I just looked up sewing classes in San Diego- thanks for the inspiration!

Erin – With the right teacher(s), it’s much easier than you might expect.

We have a similar place like this in Dallas – it’s called Make Studio, and it’s in the Bishop Arts District of Oak Cliff. I actually took a sewing class there earlier this summer and made a bag too! I never thought I’d be able to do something like that as I didn’t really sew beforehand.
And we did go out and buy the Project Runway sewing machine, and although I know how to sew a pillow, I am VEXED by sewing zippers!!
I need to take another class!

I knew (at one point) how to sew. I could make everything from Peter-Pan collars and button holes. I even knew how to ease in a shoulder of a fitted shirt!
It’s been far too long since I got out the sewing machine – I can’t even remember how to put in the bobbin properly ~Oye!
This post has inspired me to try it again. Thanks for reminding me that it isn’t too late to look into a refresher course.

Rachel – Zippers are complicated. I sewed one in during my second class, but I think it would take some work for me to do it properly.
ABCD – It’s NEVER too late:)
