I am moving from Los Angeles to Virginia Beach. I am simultaneously nervous and excited about the move. Like fellow EAD writer ABCD, I’m in the process of deciding where I want to reside next. For now, I will be back to my hometown to temporarily stay in my parents’ home.

The majority of my possessions have already been shipped. All that I need to do is get my car from here to there. I thought this would be a perfect opportunity to see the country. I know that December is less than ideal for cross country road trips, but necessity dictates that I take the trip now. A week from today, my good friend and I will be headed on a cross-country excursion. We will be taking the Southern route through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana. From Louisiana, we’ll be heading North through Mississippi and Tennessee. We have to make a special stop in Kentucky. After Kentucky, we’ll head through North Carolina to our final destination of Virginia Beach.

To our EAD readers, do you have any advice or tips for someone taking a cross country road trip? Are there any sights or places we should see on our way through these states?

we heart your comments!

I took a very similar trip when I moved from DC to San Diego. My only advice is to go slow and avoid the Javelina! (see google images!) To save some $$, we alternated between camping and staying in hotels (well maybe the husband actually wanted to camp, I just liked that we saved money). At a campground in Texas, there were dozens of Javelina running around. They are essentially feral pigs, but I’m pretty sure the Swamp Rats in The Princess Bride were modeled after the javelina!

I am going in the opposite direction during December; from Maryland to New Mexico. I too thought driving for the holidays would give me an opportunity to check out the country. We are going to be doing our sight seeing from the inside of the car. Our goal is to make it in two days. Good luck on the move and i will wave as we pass each other out there on the road!

Yay for road trips, Anne! Y and I took one from Maine to SF a few years ago and had a blast seeing the country. We also took the Southern Route. Our favorite things to see were (in no particular order):
Sedona, AZ
Santa Fe/Taos, NM
Cadillac Ranch, near Amarillo TX
Mammoth Caves in Cave City, KY
and New England (which you’ve probably seen)

My husband and I moved cross-country at the beginning of this year. Our route was Mississippi – Arkansas – Oklahoma – Texas – New Mexico – Arizona – Nevada. We divided the trip up into three days, which put us each evening in a large city so we for sure found accommodations (we also had friends living in the cities). By the time we got to Nevada, I was a bit frantic from driving in the car for three days and not sleeping well each night.

My only piece of advice is: get plenty of sleep and rest the night before you leave. I started out the trip unable to sleep and was a mess by the time we got to Nevada. Good luck! It sounds like your trip will have longer stops and you’re going toward someone you know so that helps! :)
