Our route was Mississippi - Arkansas - Oklahoma - Texas - New Mexico - Arizona - Nevada. We divided the trip up into three days, which put us each evening in a large city so we for sure found accommodations (we also had friends living in the cities). By the time we got to Nevada, I was a bit frantic from driving in the car for three days and not sleeping well each night. My only piece of advice is: get plenty of sleep and rest the night before you leave. I started out the trip unable to sleep and was a mess by the time we got to Nevada. Good luck! Y and I took one from Maine to SF a few years ago and had a blast seeing the country. We also took the Southern Route. I too thought driving for the holidays would give me an opportunity to check out the country. We are going to be doing our sight seeing from the inside of the car. Our goal is to make it in two days. My only advice is to go slow and avoid the Javelina! (see google images!) To save some $$, we alternated between camping and staying in hotels (well maybe the husband actually wanted to camp, I just liked that we saved money). At a campground in Texas, there were dozens of Javelina running around.
