Paper and Clocks?

I’m a loud-mouthed, legally blonde, wannabe writer, enjoying life in the Big D with my new, sweet husband and our errant terrier, The Boom. My passion for gorgeous footwear, wine and cheese, heinous reality television, and pretty paper colors the “pages” of my personal blog Elefantitas Alegres. You can also find me moonlighting as Fashionista Vista – otherwise known as my attempt to make the world a smidge more fashionable, one online purchase at a time!

Our first wedding anniversary is quickly approaching – I cannot believe that its already been one year since we said “I do!”  {See the full wedding recap here, if you’re curious!}

Oregon Covered Bridge

Our big celebration will take place during our week-long trip to Oregon at the very end of the month, but we still deserve a few small tokens to commemorate our very first year on March 28th, yes?

Yes!

While I’m not always a stickler for antiquated customs, I think following the “anniversary guides” at least somewhat is a fun way to mark the years!  The more traditional of the two  dictates that the first anniversary shall be observed by gifts of paper, while the more modern list tells me that clocks are all the rage for Year One (see both lists here).

I totally have “paper” covered…

Velveteen Rabbit

One of our wedding readings was taken from Margery Williams’ The Velveteen Rabbit – one of my very favorite children’s books.   Evs had never read The Velveteen Rabbit as a child (shocking and oh-so-sad!) but loved the story when we read it together when picking out elements for our ceremony.  I originally wanted to hunt down a first edition copy from 1922… but it turns out those run about $16,500.  Bummer.  A newer edition with the original text and artwork (for less than $10 no less!) will have to suffice.

I’m well aware that this next token is really a gift for me, rather than for Evs… or as I like to say “A Gift for Us” (translation: Evs will say “oh yeah honey, that’s nice,” and not give it a second thought as he passes it each day in our hallway).  But come on, how can any lover of pretty paper pass this up?

A custom calligraphy piece of our wedding vows would just look so lovely framed in conjunction with one of our wedding photos… I think our gallery wall is definitely in need of this addition!

And I know, I know… “Wood” is not until the Fourth Anniversary… but it is our fourth year dating anniversary and we’ve both been lusting after our neighbors’ Adirondack chairs.  Enjoying a glass of wine outside, relaxing in these babies would be the perfect way to welcome Spring!  Plus these would be a total and utter surprise for Evs.   Now, the big decision… Red or Yellow?

So I think I’ll forgo the “Clocks” route this year… although I would be over the moon were I to receive this watch (over which I’ve been drooling for a year now).  Um, yeah, ain’t gonna happen.

How did you celebrate your first anniversary?

we heart your comments!
  1. I’m so with you on the “Happy first anniversary, honey, please enjoy this product of paper perfection featuring our vows that you will from here on out never notice again!” I mean, at least we KNOW that’s the case going in, right?

I live in Oregon and I’m pretty sure I have been to that covered bridge. What made you decide to come to Oregon for your anniversary trip? Where are you going to go? If you need restaurant or other recommendations let me know. I think I know all of the good restaurants in Eugene and Portland not to mention all the good vineyards. There are a lot of amazing vineyards especially near Eugene.

  4. I love the anniversary guides, too! I gave my husband a copy of “I Like You” by Sandol Stoddard while my husband gave me diamond stud earrings…wrapped in computer paper for the “paper” part. :)

  5. Happy first anniversary!

Mom read from the Velveteen Rabbit at our ceremony too! Love that book! I should post about that on my blog someday.

I got my husband framed wedding vows for our anniversary. It was more a gift for me (ha!) but he liked it too.

  6. I adore the custom-calligraphed vows! Amazing! I might have to pull that stunt on R come July!
Congrats on one year / four years! Cheers to K & E.

  7. Yay Willamette Valley! You’re going to love it here. For our first anniversary, I attempted to recreate the top tier of our wedding cake. It looked awful but it tasted ridiculously good, and in the end that’s obviously what matters, right? Happy anniversary!!

  8. We celebrated our first anniversary in December. For some reason, N had it in his head that we had to stick to the gift lists, so we did. He got me a poster I’d been wanting from Keep Calm Gallery and an iPod docking radio with a clock. I bought him a coffee table book about NYC (our honeymoon destination). Unfortunately since our anniversary is around Christmas we didn’t get the chance to officially celebrate until after the new year.

Hope y’all have a happy anniversary and a great trip!

  9. so I know I’m a little behind on my google reader but I love that Michael Kors watch. I decided to go with a Fossil watch that looks pretty similar with a little more bling:
