DIY Button Artwork

Briana is a Colorado native who married a seriously amazing man, Dr. Dave, on June 20, 2009. She's obsessed with ruffles, vintage shoe clips, banjo players, and creamy risotto. Briana also adores flowers and is creating her own business plan (after DIY-ing her own wedding flowers) for a floral company called "Petaling in Tandem." She and Dr. Dave recently remodeled a 1941 bungalow in Denver, Colorado, with their own grubby hands. Dr. Dave's job will likely be taking them to a new location shortly, so they're brushing up on those plumbing skills all over again! Their new family challenge is to create their sustainable and organic lifestyle, while keeping it affordable and practical.

With all the moving around Dr. Dave and I do (we’ve moved 4 times in 2 years!), we haven’t had much of a chance to accumulate nice artwork.  But with so many white walls, it gets old quickly!

So this weekend, we found a little way to decorate our wall with some things we had laying around, and came up with:

This little number!  I actually love the way it turned out, and it was SO easy to do.  It really warms up the area above my desk, plus we didn’t have to purchase anything to create this, which made it low on resource usage.

Start with a sheet of plywood, size up to you.

Stain it according to how dark/light you want it.  I don’t particularly like the smell of varnish and wood stains, so we went the natural route and stained this with many layers of very dark espresso.

Next, use hot glue to affix buttons of various sizes and colors to the board in a pattern.  Attach picture hooks to the back, and hang!  It’s that easy!

What’s your favorite piece of art in your home?

  1. I love making art for our home! My favorite piece so far is a monogram–”K” for our last name, made from old tools that belonged to my husband’s grandfather. Set on burlap in a shadowbox–it looks lovely on our dresser next to the ceramic lovebirds that were our cake toppers.
