Kitchen Inspiration

Briana is a Colorado native who married a seriously amazing man, Dr. Dave, on June 20, 2009. She's obsessed with ruffles, vintage shoe clips, banjo players, and creamy risotto. Briana also adores flowers and is creating her own business plan (after DIY-ing her own wedding flowers) for a floral company called "Petaling in Tandem." She and Dr. Dave recently remodeled a 1941 bungalow in Denver, Colorado, with their own grubby hands. Dr. Dave's job will likely be taking them to a new location shortly, so they're brushing up on those plumbing skills all over again! Their new family challenge is to create their sustainable and organic lifestyle, while keeping it affordable and practical.

So as you dear readers may recall from one of my previous posts, we’re moving to Denver in about 10 weeks.  We just can’t wait to get into our new home and start doing some remodeling work.  We’re hoping this will be the place we can stay for at least the next 5 years or so, but if not, we want to make sure that it’s something that would be easily maintainable and retain its value for the next tenants.

My sweet dad was able to get into the house, though the current tenant is still there, and snap some photos so we can start thinking about things we want to do in there.  Again, the house was built in 1941, and they haven’t really touched the kitchen since.

Current kitchen: we’re looking at subway tiles for the backsplash, re-finishing the hardwood floor under that vinyl, replacing the wood door with a white steel door, and replacing the windows and light fixture.  The biggest unknown is the countertop…even though I secretly love the yellow formica, my dad thinks it’s outdated and worn so we’re thinking of butcher block or soapstone…any other thoughts on alternatives? Super affordable and easy to DIY would be great!

We’d like to knock out this wall, to open up the kitchen to the living room, but we need to determine whether the wall is load bearing first.

Here’s some of the photos I’ve found that are great inspiration:

love the vintage toaster, painted hardwood, and light-bright of this kitchen.

The ceiling here is so interesting. It seems easy to DIY and create a little “depth.”  Has anyone tried ceiling refurbishin?

The white subway tiles contrasted with the dark countertop (soapstone, I believe) are striking!

Anyone struck by some inspiration?

we heart your comments!
  1. Many of the same inspiration photos we used for our kitchen! Love it!

  2. love your inspirations! We have done a tiny bit of ceiling DIY. We put up molding in our old toilet. It was a little tricky but it turned out really well. Though doing anything on the ceiling can make your neck painful from all the awkward positions!

  3. Oh this is my dream! To buy an older house and get to remodel. I have a folder of inspiration photos too. I love that 2nd picture. Even though the 3rd one is my immediate favorite, I love the warmth and homeyness of the 2nd with the yellow and blue. I could imagine a pup and kids in there and cookies baking. :)

    Hey B -

Sorry for the random post, but, I’m currently scoping out the world of knit shrugs/boleros for my wedding and keep thinking back to yours. Where did you come across it?

    Love the remodel ideas, btw!

  6. I love your blog! I can’t wait to see how the kitchen turns out!

I actually live in Denver myself! Let’s get together! :)

  7. Ok, so apparently I’m awful about responding to posts!! So soryr!

Heather: My shrug was from Anthropologie. I got it on sale ages ago! With this late response you’ve probably already gotten one,but I would be totally willing to lend you mine if you haven’t had your wedding yet!

Lexy: Let’s do! I’ll send you an email. :)
