So, if you follow me on Twitter, you may know that for a loooooong time now I’ve been coveting a DSLR. Well, I finally broke down and purchased one!
I went with the Canon Rebel XSi, with the kit lens.
I’ve had it for all of three days but I am in LOVE so far! Charlie moves super fast, so obviously I had trouble getting a great photo with a point and shoot. Here is my favorite Charlie pic with my Rebel so far:

So I’ve read all of Jenna’s awesome posts on photography, and naturally I will be shooting in auto mode forever. A photographer I am not. But if any of you have this camera and have any newbie tips to share that would be fabulous!
Also, what lenses do you think I should invest in for travel photography?

Congrats! The hubs just bought me a Pentax K-x for finishing my MBA, and I’m very excited to learn all about it!

Congrats on the new camera! I would definitely recommend something lightweight and durable for travel photography — and fast, if you’re willing to shell out the dough!
Canon’s lenses really are the best, but if you’re looking to save money without sacrificing too much quality, Sigma is a good way to go. Try their 17-70mm f/2.8.

I have been on the fence about this camera for so long now and I can’t seem to pull the trigger. I actually just wrote a post about this today. I look forward to reading more about this new toy of yours.

Fun!!! Congrats on making the move.
Try shooting in Aperture priority mode for a slight move from auto- you just set how shallow/open you want your depth of field and then it auto-selects the speed for you…. this is super helpful for shooting dogs that won’t sit still or for needing to take a shot quickly but still wanting some creative control. It is a fun way to wade into more manual settings.

Yay, I’m so excited for you! I agree completely with Tara. When I got my Rebel I forbade myself from shooting on auto, just so I could learn, and it’s definitely worked. I still don’t really know any of the technical terms (whoops), but I can turn some dials and press some buttons and get a decent shot. Pretty empowering :) Keep us posted on your progress!
