My New Camera!

Hi! I'm the editor and publisher of Elizabeth Anne Designs. I live in Chicago with my hubby and puppy and am passionate about the Atlanta Braves, pumpkin pie, and traveling around the world!

So, if you follow me on Twitter, you may know that for a loooooong time now I’ve been coveting a DSLR.  Well, I finally broke down and purchased one!

I went with the Canon Rebel XSi, with the kit lens.

I’ve had it for all of three days but I am in LOVE so far!  Charlie moves super fast, so obviously I had trouble getting a great photo with a point and shoot.  Here is my favorite Charlie pic with my Rebel so far:

So  I’ve read all of Jenna’s awesome posts on photography, and naturally I will be shooting in auto mode forever.  A photographer I am not.  But if any of you have this camera and have any newbie tips to share that would be fabulous!

Also, what lenses do you think I should invest in for travel photography?

we heart your comments!
  1. Congrats! The hubs just bought me a Pentax K-x for finishing my MBA, and I’m very excited to learn all about it!

  2. Congrats on the new camera! I would definitely recommend something lightweight and durable for travel photography — and fast, if you’re willing to shell out the dough!

Canon’s lenses really are the best, but if you’re looking to save money without sacrificing too much quality, Sigma is a good way to go. Try their 17-70mm f/2.8.

  3. I have been on the fence about this camera for so long now and I can’t seem to pull the trigger. I actually just wrote a post about this today. I look forward to reading more about this new toy of yours.

  4. Fun!!! Congrats on making the move.

Try shooting in Aperture priority mode for a slight move from auto- you just set how shallow/open you want your depth of field and then it auto-selects the speed for you…. this is super helpful for shooting dogs that won’t sit still or for needing to take a shot quickly but still wanting some creative control. It is a fun way to wade into more manual settings.

  5. Yay, I’m so excited for you! I agree completely with Tara. When I got my Rebel I forbade myself from shooting on auto, just so I could learn, and it’s definitely worked. I still don’t really know any of the technical terms (whoops), but I can turn some dials and press some buttons and get a decent shot. Pretty empowering :) Keep us posted on your progress!
