Day in the Life: Kate

Posted 08/05/2010 by Kate in Life, Newlywed Life \ 6 comments

I’m a loud-mouthed, legally blonde, wannabe writer, enjoying life in the Big D with my new, sweet husband and our errant terrier, The Boom. My passion for gorgeous footwear, wine and cheese, heinous reality television, and pretty paper colors the “pages” of my personal blog Elefantitas Alegres. You can also find me moonlighting as Fashionista Vista – otherwise known as my attempt to make the world a smidge more fashionable, one online purchase at a time!

Thursday.  A Hair-Washing Day.  {I’m an Every-Other kind of gal unless I’ve been exercising outside in the Texas heat.} Thus, my wake-up call comes at 6:24.  This particular morning, The Boom decides she’s not feeling the snooze button and whines and frantically wiggles her bum until I haul myself out of bed to let her out.  I start the coffee.  6 cups… all mine!  Evs shuffles to the guest room to catch 30 more minutes of Zzz’s since my bathroom is attached to the master bedroom and the shower is noisy.  Words cannot express how excited I am that our new abode has a real master bath, big enough for two people, with pipes that don’t moan!  I shower, wrap myself in my duckie robe and pour my first cup of coffee.

Today is definitely a Booty Mug Day.  All mornings are better with the Booty Mug.  Farmers market peaches and Kashi in a cheery latte bowl round out breakfast which is spent watching Good Morning America while my hair air dries a bit.   I miss Diane Sawyer!

7:15… Evs is up!  There is banter, friendly reminders not to leave the water running in the shower for 5 minutes before anyone actually gets in, and perhaps a tie-consultation.  I blow-dry,  ”put on my face,” and get dressed.  Right around the time I’m snapping a couple quick photos for ITPitB, Evs is out the door with a kiss from me and a friendly reminder to remember his lunch.  I pack mine, pour the rest of my coffee into a more work appropriate travel mug, put The Boom in “her room,” and am in the car by 7:55, ready to commute 33 miles to work.

I jam to the 80s on 8 and amuse myself with the scenery.

Ripleys Believe it or Not

I’m at my desk by 8:35, catching up with emails, checking my calendar, and pulling client files for my first two appointments.  I note that both of my morning clients speak Spanish so I put on my Espanol Thinking Cap and chug my coffee.  {To review, I am an immigration attorney for a domestic violence non-profit!}  Both my 9 a.m. and my 11 a.m. appointments run over an hour.  In the 45 minutes between the two, I sort my mail from the day before and do a little filing.  I also pray to the Non-Profit Gods for the umpteenth time this week for the gift of a legal secretary in the renewal grant (and, um, also for the renewal grant itself !).

My 11 a.m. leaves at 12:15… Lunch time!  We were short on leftovers this morning so Emergency Lean Cuisine Pizza to the rescue.  Pizza is the only frozen diet meal that is remotely palatable to me.   In slightly cooler months, I might take my lunch over to the park across the street for a little fresh air, but, seeing as it’s July in Dallas, I opt to eat in Greece and proof some translations (oh okay, fine, and catch up on my Google Reader!).

More translations until 1:15 when it’s time to pack up and head to the agency’s Fort Worth office (the legal dpartment is between Dallas and Fort Worth) for Legal Options Group – a weekly opportunity for non-clients to ask general questions on immigration and family law issues.   These sessions are often exhausting and leave me feeling part referee / part therapist.  Thankfully, I’m free to leave for the day after I’m finished with Group which means I cut out an hour early at 3:30!

Back in the car… this end of the commute takes a bit longer, but I usually pass the time chatting with my parents or catching up with friends – I always have my best gab sessions in the car, it seems!  Plus, the view on the way back into Dallas is quite impressive and always makes me feel like a true urbanite!

4:30 – Time to hit the fancy gym!  While I’ll miss the gorgeous locker rooms and the Kiehl’s products, I’ll be pleased as punch to have White Rock Lake right across the street come September – not to mention the extra cash in my checking account!

5:45 – Home again, home again, lickety split!  I’m greeted with lots of puppy kisses and tail wags.  I change into PJs, repack my gym bag for the next day, and get a head start on dinner.  I’m tweaking the Pioneer Woman’s Roasted Red Pepper Sauce to toss over tortellini, and I have the Glee soundtrack blaring from my laptop… This is always my favorite “me time” slot of the day.

As a “Big Law Widow,” I usually eat dinner all by my lonesome.  Tonight, my saucy version turns out pretty stellar, if I do say so myself, and The Boom and I watch a bit of trashy television off the DVR and do some blogging and tweeting while we wait for Evs to return.

9:30 – Evs is home!  I get his plate and we chat about the day while he eats.  We watch Bethenny Getting Married, and I feel thankful that I have a husband who shares my love of Bravo programming.  And one who at least doesn’t have to work on the weekends…usually.  He deserves some “me time” after a long day, and I’m ready to curl up with my book, so I get ready for bed.  Someone else is sleepy too…

10:45 – I read 6 pages and pass out with the light on.  Tomorrow I won’t remember that I read 4 of those 6 pages.  Typical.

Hey, at least tomorrow’s Friday, right?

That mug just made my afternoon! I know it’s probably a rare collectible, but where did you find such a treasure?

Love your pic of downtown Dallas! My home (the one where my heart is) is in Dallas, but my physical home is in Mexico City right now. Loooove catching a glimpse of my heart home on my computer screen and seeing how small the world really is. =)

  6. The Boom! She is so cute in that last picture. Also loved reading about your job.
