Day in the Life: Erin @ Blue-Eyed Bride

I'm a Southern newlywed from Louisiana and South Carolina. I am a grammar queen, Emily Post wannabe, Williams-Sonoma junkie, and always want to make my Southern mother and grandmothers proud. We're expecting our first child in June 2009, but we already have a precious Golden Retriever and a Brussels Griffon who think they're our babies. Visit me at Blue-Eyed Bride to read my attempt at chronicling all of my random thoughts, ideas, crazy projects, fashion, and fun with my husband!

When we were first told that we would be doing a day in the life posts, I wasn’t so sure how this would work. It’s very rare that one day in my life is exactly like the other. I’m a stay-at-home-mom for my little boy and my daily schedule is dictated by his very good, sometimes rigid, schedule. But we work with it and I make sure that I get everything done while still helping him maintain consistent nap times and meal times.

Here’s an accurate run-down of my Monday.

7:30 a.m.

I am awakened to the sound of a little boy making humming noises in his bed. He’s just kind of babbling to himself, trying to wake up. So I take a few minutes and shut my eyes for a little while longer. My husband, Todd, is such a great father and great husband. Every morning, he takes the early shift. He hops up to feed our two dogs, Boudreaux and Fiona, and then goes and rescues Hudson (our little boy) from his crib. Todd and Hudson spend a few minutes every morning eating breakfast together while Todd reads the paper and pets the dogs. Hudson usually eats oatmeal and blueberries for breakfast accompanied by a straw sippy cup of organic whole milk.

8:00 a.m.

In the meantime, I’m getting out of bed (finally) and brushing my teeth, brushing my hair, and searching for something comfortable in my closet to throw on. The shower comes during nap time. Apologies to anyone who sees me before then!

My typical SAHM summer wardrobe consists of white jeans and a ribbed tank top in various colors. I have a colored ribbed tank top for every day of the week. It’s ridiculous, but it gets the job done!

8:30 a.m.

Hudson and I settle down in the living room with books, toys, and puzzles and start our day. We say goodbye to Todd. This is one of Hudson’s favorite things to do. He stands at the glass door and waves and shouts, “bye bye!”

We read books and talk about words, pictures, shapes, etc. We also play with Boudreaux and Fiona. These three keep me company during the day.

9:00 a.m.

I put Hudson in his play yard, so I can run upstairs to throw some clothes in the washing machine and start unpacking my bag from the long weekend away at a friend’s wedding.

9:10 a.m.

We’re back downstairs playing, singing songs, reading, etc.

9:30 a.m.

It’s time to switch the laundry over and hang most of it to dry.

10:00 a.m.

Hudson goes down for his nap and I frantically start doing what I need to do.

I make the weekly meal plan and write out my grocery list. This usually happens during the weekend, but because I was out of town this past weekend, it had to wait until Monday.

I go through my to-do list for the day.

I water the plants outside so they don’t fry in the 100 degree temperatures. Poor little plants.

10:30 a.m.

I have about an hour left, maybe an hour and a half, of nap time. I have to use it wisely. I don’t wash my hair every day– more like every third or fourth day– but I have to today. After my shower I let my hair air dry while I go downstairs and go through my Google reader. It’s shameful. I should spend about 30 minutes reading blogs, but it turns into more like an hour. Or more.

Today I actually posted a blog sale of some clothes I needed to sell.

12:00 p.m.

It’s lunch time. Today Hudson is eating a grilled cheese sandwich, blueberries, bananas, green peas, and oranges. He gets small servings of each, but he is typically a good eater. He’s good about letting us know when he’s all done by signing “all done” and letting us know when he wants more by giving the sign for “more.”

I eat half of his grilled cheese sandwich!

12:30 p.m.

Hudson and I go for a walk. The sweet dogs don’t get to come because it’s hard to handle the stroller and two dogs, but we enjoy our walks. We stop off at a park and Hudson gets to play on the swings.

1:00 p.m.

Hudson watches a little bit of a Baby Einstein video so I can start packing for my trip to NYC for BlogHer.

1:45 p.m.

Hudson and I run to the grocery store to get the groceries for the week. Tonight’s meal is from Cooking Light: Fresh Food Fast Week Night Meals and it’s shrimp with rice and Greek style green beans. It’s my favorite cookbook because it’s so easy and fast and that’s perfect for my life right now.

At some point during my day I stopped taking pictures.

2:30 p.m.

We’re home from the grocery store and I get a cup of milk for Hudson before his nap. He goes down for his second nap of the day when he normally sleeps for about an hour.

2:45 p.m.

I spent this time finishing up my NYC packing and getting the house organized for my mom and Todd to be able to take care of Hudson and the house while I’m away. This basically just means labeling prepared food and making sure Hudson’s outfits are clean and ready for someone else to find them.

4:15 p.m.

Hudson wakes up from his nap and has a little snack.

4:45 p.m.

I drives Hudson to The Little Gym for a Monday night class. They learn songs and how to interact with other children. The work on various motor skill development activities like forward and backward rolls and it’s a good opportunity for him to get out and socialize.

6:30 p.m.

We’re home from Little Gym and I start dinner.

7:00 p.m.

Todd, Hudson, and I sit down to dinner after the dogs are fed.

7:30 p.m.

We go outside to play a little and get Hudson in “wind down” mode. We come back in to read some books and give Hudson his bath.

8:00 p.m.

We put Hudson to bed after reading Goodnight Moon and Todd and I join each other on the couch to watch mindless reality TV and read books.

11:00 p.m.

We finally make it up to bed. I’m always asleep two seconds after my head hits the pillow. Maybe I’m exhausted and maybe it’s the Sleep Number bed.

we heart your comments!
  1. From someone who’s never owned a pair of white jeans out of fear of dirt, what are your secrets?!

I don’t know why it is so fun to get a peek into someone else’s day, but it is! :) You’re such a great writer – and the pictures were great.. I got quite the chuckle out of you forgetting to take more pictures halfway through the day… I can totally relate! Thanks for sharing!

  4. This is pretty much the most worthless day I’ve ever read. get a job!

  5. I love your day!! Im preggo with my 1st(a boy!) and am staying home for the most part (I also am opening a pilates studio-but that wont be until mid-next year). I also have 2 pups and I like that you included them in your post :) It is niceto hear how structured your little guy’s schedule is!

  6. This was so fun to read! Why is it that we love looking into the daily lives of others? Either way, I’m glad you shared :)

  7. I’ve been following your blog for awhile, but I don’t think I’ve ever commented before. Don’t listen to grumpies like “Wow,” above. What you’re doing is priceless in regard to raising a well-adjusted child. There will be plenty of time to “get a job” later on. My kids are all grown and on their own now, and how I treasure the days I was able so spend with them as a SAHM!

  8. Bless your heart, Wow. I hope you feel better soon. Erin, as a mother to 2 children who has to return to work tomorrow (as a teacher), I say my job at home is more fun as well as more challenging. Hopefully “Wow” will get a chance to experience this someday.

  9. Experiencing it now-as a SAHM. I stand by my comment: It’s worthless. No true activities, no giving,no volunteering, justselfish whining and quite frankly the majority of her day could be done in 2 hours.

  10. @Rebekah surprisingly, I’ve not had a white jeans incident yet and they haven’t gotten any stains!

@Wow- I wrote about a day where we work around the house for my DITL post. I guess I can point out that on Wednesday nights I rehearse with our church choir and then go direct our church children’s choir. Those are recreational and volunteer. I worked VBS and Music Camp this summer. On every other Tuesday night I work Junior League activities and attend meetings. I find that my days are not boring and I feel they are very fulfilling. Thankfully, I have one day a week that I can spend at home doing the laundry and cleaning that has to get done. Perhaps you could share your day with us so other SAHM can learn how to better spend their time in order to get things done faster.

@wow – your comment is completely unjustified and extremely rude. i would normally mark you as spam, but the lovely people above have saved me the trouble, by responding in an extremely gracious manner to an extremely ungracious comment.

bloggers are real people with real feelings, and it’s not your place to judge, ridicule, or belittle anyone. that kind of behavior and rudeness is not welcome on EAD.
