Pick Paint for Bedroom by somewhereinmiddleamerica on Polyvore.com
One of the projects I hoped to accomplish while my husband was deployed was to finish decorating our bedroom, which including painting the walls and buying curtains, a rug and nightstands. So far I’ve only purchased nightstands. I have about month to go before J returns home, so I need to start making some decisions. The most crucial decision, though, is paint. That will determine what color window treatment and floor covering I get.
Choosing a paint color should not be this hard, but I am truly stuck. Here’s my problem: My bedding is grey and yellow. But not the same grey and yellow. My winter duvet (above left) features more of a blueish grey and a citron yellow. My summer quilt (above right) has more of a purple-ish grey and a buttery, canary yellow. I have no idea how to match both the cool- colored duvet and the warm-colored quilt.
Now before you say, “PJ, just make your life easy for yourself and choose white,” I have to tell you that I can’t use white paint because my crown molding and trim are off-white. Ugg.
Currently I’m leaning towards teal. But there are only two window in the room, so I don’t want to make the space too dark. (Although maybe a dark room is better for sleeping…) A lighter shade of teal would be preferable, but light teal looks like robin’s egg blue to me. Would that work?
My other option is purple, although my husband is a bit wary about this idea. But it would have to be a really bright purple like orchid or a really dark one like aubergine so that it contrasts with the grey bedding, and I don’t know which way to go!
(Of course, I’m open to any other color suggestions not mentioned here.)
Right now the room is a very pale grey that actually looks light blue to me, and I think it looks very bland with our birch-colored IKEA dressers, white nightstands and the white lacquered bench at the foot of the bed.
Ladies (and gentlemen), we have 5 weeks to get this done before J comes home. I need your keen eye for color and your decision making skills because I really, really want to check this off my list!

Oh that’s a dilemma!
Personally, I like a darker deeper turquoise or teal. We did our bedroom in a deep turquoise and I love it!

I think the robin’s egg blue would look really nice with all of your bedding, but I’m kind of obsessed with that color these days. Honestly, we painted our bathroom teal a few years ago and it was BRIGHT!! And dark, if it’s possible for something to be both at the same time LOL. I would never, ever do it for a bedroom. It was not a restful color.
After watching tons of HGTV, the recommendation is to never do bright, out there and dark colors. It turns off other buyers. If you know this is your forever house, then go for it. You are a miliatry wife, and there might be the possibility you will be selling and moving at any given time. Do you really want to do a lot of repainting before you move?
I would also say forget purple all together – you are not a 5 year old girl and your husband – as you said – seems wary. Blue would work and a nice light blue should be fine with both grey and yellow. The room will also look different with each bedding so you’d always have a different look.
there is a benjamin moore color called lily white, actually, that is a blueishy-greyishy white but it’s a nice light color and very soothing. we have it in 2 rooms in our house and it is a very flexible color when it comes to accessories. you can make it pop a lot more then light grey that is on your walls now and it will blend with offwhite trim. or, just get a high gloss white and repaint the trim and molding.

I’m definitely leaning towards blue (either teal or robin’s egg), although my 5-year-old self would love a bright purple room ;) I think orchid would look great with grey and yellow, but maybe I need to wait to have a daughter before I use that color combo. I wish I could find a teal that wasn’t dark, but that’s the whole point of teal, isn’t it?
Any other colors I should consider?

I think the darker teal sounds gorgeous and would compliment both bed covers well! That’s definitely the color I would pick!

Okay, so I’m going to be the one…
I LOVE that dark purple color – like an eggplant color!! I think that would be fabulous with all the things you have pictured. It would look great with the gray and yellow – both gray and yellows – as well as your dressers. Color-wise, I think if you did that darker purple, it would be very sophisticated.
I’m not a huge fan of the teal. I don’t really like the teal and gray together.
I think the darker purple would look fab. Do it. (You can always paint over it if you don’t like it!)
At least paint big swatches of your two favorites on the wall. This will really help you decide, as well as actually go through with painting (as you’ll have to paint to cover the swatches!!).
Sorry I don’t have any other ideas for color…. I think it’s because the grays and yellow are very different. What might look good with one, doesn’t really with the other.
Good luck!

Come on PJ – you KNOW blue & grey go together well :-)
And I love how we’ve been conditioned to spell it g-r-e-y when a lot of people use g-r-a-y as their go to :-)

I painted a small bedroom in my house of Cleveland a federal blue with bright white trim. My painter didn’t use primer (bum!) but it turned out this rich, restful blue with a purple undertone.
It was a happy accident I’ll be mimicing in my new apartment bedroom here in Omaha. Every guest I had commented on it and I found myself choosing to take naps in that room over my own.
Rich, darker blues really work. I think the right purple would have the same effect. Can’t wait to see what you do.
