Decorating for Fall

Posted 09/28/2010 by Rachel in Decor \ 2 comments

With the changing of the seasons, there’s no better time to change up the decor in your home.  Change is good!  And I know that I crave different things to look at, different things to cozy up with on cooler nights.   The best part is that all this change in your home doesn’t have to cost you a lot of change from your wallet.

Some things are no-brainers.  Like a cozy throw over a chair or sofa to curl up with …

Library Inspiration

For the last month or so, my husband and I have been working on cleaning up and organizing our home office (which is quite a job).  Since, according to him, “every other room in the house” is mine, this will be his room. ( I didn’t really realize that I had such free reign on the rest of the house – does anyone else split their house up like this?)

When we started talking about how he wanted the office to look, …

Cowhide Rugs

Posted 09/08/2010 by Rachel in Decor \ 3 comments

Recently, I’ve had my eye on cowhide rugs.  I love how they can add texture, softness and interest to a room.  I also love their durability – like leather, they wear well and even look a little good with a few nicks and scratches.  While you oftentimes see them either with very modern or very rustic decor, I think they can fit in with almost any style.

They can be natural colored, like above, or stenciled and dyed like below:

Skirted Console Tables

I’ve always loved the look of tailored skirted console tables.  Normally, you see skirts on round tables, but you can really slipcover anything.  Not only does it cover up a less than stellar or mis-matched piece of furniture, but it can give you some hidden storage.

Here are some of my favorite inspiration pictures:

And all of these pictures gave me the inspiration to tackle an eyesore in our bedroom:

Isn’t it pretty???  It was my husbands “entertainment center” in his old apartment, …

Easy Crockpot Barbeque Sandwiches

Posted 08/16/2010 by Rachel in Cooking and Food, Recipes \ 0 comments

This is one of our favorite weeknight recipes.  For me, it’s super super easy, and delicious.  For my husband, it’s delicious, filling, and (in his words) “not tacos again”.

The combination of the tomatoes with a little kick and the vinegar from the pickles really gives this dish a great taste.

Ingredients:

1.5 to 2 pounds roast

1 can of Rotel (diced tomatoes and green chilies)

1  16-oz bottle of dill pickle slices

barbeque spices/rub

barbeque sauce

Directions:

Put roast in crockpot and rub/pat with barbeque spices.  Pour in the …

Day in the Life: Rachel

As many of you might know, I live with dogs… five of them, to be exact.

Meet Charlie:

JJ:

Murphy:

Riley:

and Rascal:

We did not set out to have 5 dogs.  We love them all to death, but 5 dogs is a lot!  When my husband and I met, I had Riley and Murphy.  He had Rascal.  And along the way we picked up a chihuahua (JJ) who was abandoned at a truck stop outside of Abilene, and a Llasa-Poo (Charlie) who an animal society …

If you can’t get to the beach or the lake this summer, you can bring a bit of that style back home.

All you need are some whitewashed walls:

Some stripes, especially on rugs:

White with Pops of Color

Posted 07/13/2010 by Rachel in Decor \ 7 comments

Last time I posted, I talked about neutral color schemes and how calm and relaxing they can be.  But if that’s not for you, sometimes adding just a hit of color into that scheme can take it from relaxing to a little more visually exciting!

As much as I love looking at and dreaming of pale neutral rooms, I live with small pops of color in my home.  To me, it adds some visual interest and a little excitement.  Plus, keeping the …

Cool Neutrals

Posted 06/30/2010 by Rachel in Decor \ 3 comments

I love orange and yellow, but when it’s really hot outside, sometimes it’s really nice to come home and relax in a cool neutral palette.  There is something that is just visually cooling about a monochromatic and neutral room when it’s 98 degrees outside.

“Neutral” doesn’t have to only be whites and naturals:

Soft monochromatic colors work well as neutrals too:
