This week’s furbaby du jour is the first born child of Cyd from The Sweetest Occasion, a regular EAD Living contributor. Nina is a six year old black lab rescue with an insatiable appetite and an unending will to play. Since 2006 she’s been keeping her mother on her toes and ruling the roost as only a first child can. By night she can be found wrestling with her baby sister, napping regularly and acting as sous chef in the kitchen lest a bit of food should happen to hit the floor. By day it is alleged that she is in fact a super hero regularly rescuing innocent bystanders from certain peril. (In fact, she’s been known to jump into the pool to “save” her parents from drowning on more than one occasion.)

Q: What is her favorite toy?
Definitely her balls and her Wubba. Frisbees are good, too, but balls reign supreme in Nina’s world.

Q: Most yummiest treat?
Baby carrots! Her Grandma Kathy got her hooked on them when she was a puppy and now she firmly believes that carrots are dog food that we humans sometimes insist on eating.

Q: Most comfy place to nap?
Typically on the couch. Or on her bed. Or on mommy and daddy’s bed. Or under mommy’s desk while she’s working. Or in the car. Basically, anywhere she can curl herself up into a tiny little ball and den down is a place she’s happy to camp out in for a while.

Q: What is Nina’s favorite travel destination?
Nana’s house! There is nothing like a day of good swimming in the lake and having Nana and Opa sneak her extra treats. Really though, anywhere the car travels is just fine by her – she loves car rides!

Q: What is her best trick?
Nina’s signature move is something I call the “Nina S Curl” where she lays down and curls her body into the shape of an S. She’s done it since she was a puppy and it’s so cute – I’ve never seen another dog lay like that! She’s also perfected the fine art of willing the gate to the backyard to open at her command so she can run down the block, following her nose wherever it might happen to take her.

What to have your little one featured on Furbaby Friday? Send an email with furbaby pictures to [living at elizabeth anne designs dot com] with the subject “Furbaby Friday” with your furbaby photos (at least 600px in width please), a couple of sentences about their stinkin’ cute personalities, and answer these questions on their behalf:

1) Favorite toy
2) Favorite treat
3) Favorite place to nap
4) Favorite travel destination (ex: petsmart, grandma’s house, the park, etc)
5) Best trick (or as I like to say “best move” – as in, Charlie’s adorable stretch where he pulls his little wrists up to his face and then pushes his arms down his chest is his best move!)

Awwww. So cute, right? To say these two rule the roost is a bit of an understatement. (I’m willing to bet many of you can relate.) Herewith, the contents of the Nina and Colby doggie treasure chest…

{all images credited to vendors, see below}

Here’s the breakdown:

Our girls love something soft and cuddly to snuggle with or to tear to bits. It’s just how they roll. They love their teddy bear from Martha Stewart for PetsMart.

True girly girls, pretty collars and matching leashes are a must. I am loving the collars from Kiss My Mutt.

Good old-fashioned, durable but still sleek – stainless steel dog bowls are the only way to go with two retrievers in the house.

Typically we try to keep the girls to organic treats and food. (Yes, I’m one of those dog moms.) That said, they love Milk Bones so we allow them to indulge from time to time.

For overzealous pups, a Gentle Leader is your best friend. Your arms will thank you.

I love all things Harry Barker, but their dog food storage containers are a favorite.

Hands down, the girls’ favorite toys are their Kong and Kong Wubbas. Plus, these toys are super durable and can hold up to active chewers.

Cozy dog beds rule! I like LLBean’s dog beds, which are durable, customizable and available in neutral colors that work with most decor.

Of course, a comfy doggie blanket is a must, too. I like Crate & Barrel’s dog blankets.

Pawz dog boots keep feet dry and free from mud, salt, anti-freeze and ice. A must for doggies in cold and/or wet climates!

So there you have our household favorites for keeping our kids happy. Do you have any pet parenting essentials?

It seems time for an update on our debate over expanding our family – we went ahead and did it! Over Labor Day weekend we brought home our new baby girl, Colby. I won’t lie. The first couple of months were fairly hellacious. I forgot what it was like to have a baby in the house and make no mistake, a puppy is nothing but a baby. Sleepless nights with endless potty breaks and crying, a chewing bout during teething that cost us (count it) two MacBook cables, two HP laptop cables and a BlackBerry charger. Oh, and an area rug. And countless socks. Not that we’re keeping track. Potty training seemed to take forever and we’re still having the occasional accident, but I think we’re through the worst of it at this point. It also has to be noted that the addition of the puppy stressed Nina (our six year old black lab) to the point that she spent the first two days projectile vomiting all over the house. So, yes, hellacious.

With that said, four months later we’re hopelessly in love and so is her big sister. At six months old she is the sweetest little pup and growing by the day. Soon she’ll be the bigger of the two dogs and probably still running about with the energy of a toddler. She still on occasion makes us want to pull our hair out, but for the most part it’s laughs and snuggles and puppy kisses. It doesn’t get much better in my world. Here are a few pictures from the last few months of puppy love…

“I swear, Ma. I don’t have muddy feet. Can we come in now?”

With all the buzz going around about this book, a few weeks ago I decided to pick up a copy of Creative, Inc. by Meg Mateo Ilasco and Joy Cho. I’m not sure what I expected but I read a couple of reviews on Amazon and decided to give it a whirl. I’m glad I did! Creative, Inc. is a quick, energizing read loaded with great tips for start-up entrepreneurs in creative fields. Whether you’re looking to leave your day job or just make extra income to supplement your current salary, Creative Inc. is a great resource for everything from determining pricing to blocking out a basic marketing strategy. Having an MBA I tend to be skeptical of business books (not because I presume to know it all, but rather because I’ve had to read a ton and am skeptical of just how helpful many of them really are). With that said, Creative, Inc. is chuck full of practical advice including all of those things creative types typically like to avoid thinking about like invoicing and taxes.

Probably my favorite part of the book were the great bios and short interviews with succesful freelancers nestled throughout. Even the most prominent entrepreneurs have to start somewhere (typically with a dream and little to no money to back themselves) and Creative, Inc. profiles a select group of inspiring, creative professionals who have succesfully made their passion their career. Additionally, while Meg and Joy make no bones about it – running your own business is long hours and tough work – Creative, Inc. is incredibly motivating and blocks out all the basics for getting yourself organized. For the to-do list driven type, it will have you scribbling notes to yourself, ready to jump right in with both feet and make it happen, whatever “it” might happen to be for you. If you’ve been thinking about how to make a go of your own gig, I highly suggest giving Creative, Inc. a read.

With fall swiftly approaching, we’re back in nesting mode around here. We’ve been living among piles of clothes, boxes, tools and drywall dust for the duration of our first six months of home ownership and while we’ve made a lot of progress, the summer largely halted any major renovation projects. We have a lot of rooms that are painted, but a lot of doors still waiting to be rehung, a room still wanting for flooring, a kitchen still desperately in need of gutting….you get the picture. At any rate, we’re now itching to get back at it and can’t wait to knock out a ton of projects this fall. To that end, I figured it was time to start rounding up some inspiration again.

I spied this cute cottage on Apartment Therapy and I just love the look and feel of these spaces. Warm, neutral and inviting with pops of interesting color and accessories and a great mix of old and new. While I think our final look will be slightly different, I want our home to feel like this one does when we’re all finished.

I am loving the layered neutrals, natural materials and bright little spot of aqua on the chair cushions. This is a room I could curl up and read a book in any day of the week.

Is that a teal lacquer desk that I spy? And I love the look of crisp black frames against the bright, neutral walls. A striped area rug that avoids being matchy-matchy? Love and love.

Crisp aqua and white paired with blonde wood floors and industrial galvanized chairs make this little dining space as cute as it is simple. I love how a little color and a few well placed accesories can go a long way.

I’m rounding up my favorite places to search for inspiration, too. Any suggestions? I’d love to know what sites you turn to for decor ideas!

I’m a little late to the party here, but couldn’t resist getting in on the day-in-the-life fun!

By day I work for Boxcar Press, a world renowned letterpress print shop, which includes our two letterpress stationery lines Bella Figura and Smock. My job involves an interesting blend of tackling all of our marketing and public relations as well as a mix of sales and client relations. By night I write The Sweetest Occasion, a blog detailing stylish inspiration for weddings, events and parties of all shapes and sizes. In a nutshell, my days are busy and often tiring, but more often than not they are also a whole lot of fun. Let’s take a walk through a pretty typical week day in my world….

6:00 AM
It’s wake up time! Our black lab Nina is not amused. She loves to snuggle and would far prefer to spend the entire day in bed. Or at least sleep in until 8.

7:00 AM
We are currently renovating our first house so on the way out the door I snap a quick “before” photo of our staircase. Once covered in nasty old carpet my husband has plans today to prime the steps in anticipation of bright white paint and a stair runner in the near future.

7:30 AM
By this time I have showered, driven to the office and settled in at my desk. I usually eat breakfast at my desk. Behold, the breakfast of champions:

Organic oatmeal and a whole lot of water do a body good. Never fear. I am not super human. You can typically find a large tankard of iced coffee looming somewhere nearby.

9:00AM
I spent the first hour or so in the morning catching up on emails. A lot of our clients and media contacts are on the West Coast so a good deal of email usually hits my inbox overnight. My first project today is to sketch out some ideas for a new feature we’re considering introducing on the Smock website. (In the end, the decision was yes so you can look forward to fun new stuff around the holidays!)

10:30 AM
This time of day is perfect for photography! We regularly update our company blogs with photos of great new things we’re printing and today I’m tackling photos of some of our recent favorites. This design is Meadow, designed exclusively for Bella Figura by Erin Jang.

12:15 PM
I scoot downstairs to the print shop to check on the status of a project. We’re lucky enough this week to have some extra help in for the summer and our awesome interns are bundling up little swatches of our new Smock gift wrap designs.

1:00 PM
Lunch time! I try to leave my desk for at least a half hour for lunch although sometimes I do succumb to eating at my desk. Today is a good day – a little break time in the lunch room with the ladies is just what I needed.

2:30 PM
Boxcar subsidizes CSA memberships for all employees with a local organic farm. I head up organizing the CSA delivery (which comes right to our office) so I head back downstairs to get things set up. Today we have lots of greens including bok choy, one of my favorites!

4:00 PM
An editorial assistant calls from a major bridal magazine for a credit check. A credit check is when a publication confirms details before an issue goes to print. They’ll verify things like the spelling of your company name, the description of the product being featured, pricing, web address, etc. This information is the type of thing you’ll find in the credits or “where to shop” section of a magazine or as a caption below a photo. Here’s an example from when Bella Figura was recently featured in New York Weddings:

4:35 PM
Another trip downstairs, this time to check on something for a client. I visit with Carrie, one of my favorite press operators. She can often be found printing on both our Heidelburg Windmills and our Vandercook presses. Today she is cleaning up so the press isn’t inked, but the big silver roller you see is usually all inked up with whatever color is being printed.

5:00 PM
I visit the space we’re currently renovating, which is soon going to be our newly expanded print shop. The floors have been newly refinished and sealed and today they’re working on finishing up the last of the electrical work.

5:45 PM
It’s quitting time for the day! I make a pit stop at the gym on my way home, where I take a Les Mills BodyAttack class. (Killer!)

7:30 PM
I get home, shower up from the gym and then make dinner. I’m a vegetarian and it’s CSA day so there are a lot of veggies in our house. This is a pretty typical dinner in our house. Couscous with a ton of fresh veggies (in this case organic kale, summer squash, and tomatoes), cannelloni beans and feta.

8:00 PM
It’s time for a little house work. It’s simple tonight – I do a quick check of our gardens and skim the pool. I also snap a quick photos of the stairs after their coat of primer earlier in the day.

8:45 PM
It’s blogging time! Tonight I’m blogging from the disaster zone that is slowing being transformed into our family room. And, yes, that is a stack of a good portion of my worldly possessions boxed up in the middle of the room. I check email, respond to inquiries, and block out blog posts for the following day. I stay right here in this chair until about 9:30 when I get restless and take my Macbook into the living room to chill on the couch.

11:30 PM
Blog work is done and it’s time for bed! I get ready for bed and manage to read all about three pages of Little Bee by Chris Cleave before passing out. Six hours from now the alarm will be going off again so it’s time for sleep.

So there you have a day in my life. Was it everything you thought it’d be?

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a dog lover of epic proportions. My five year old black lab Nina and I are the bestest of BFFs. She meets me at the door every night when I come home and she stares after me longingly when I leave for work in the morning. We play, we swim, we take long walks every night and I come home from every trip away loaded down with new toys and treats. Lately, my husband and I have been talking a lot about getting a second dog. And by “lately” I mean for the last year or so. And by “a lot” I mean nearly daily. Last week we found out about some golden retriever pups, one of whom has a minor “defect” and was having a little trouble finding a good home. (The defect being a birth mark of sorts leaving here with a small patch of black fur on one of her hind legs.) We decided to go visit. I fell in love. She’s nine weeks old and about 15lbs right now. Oh, and it should be noted, she’s hopelessly adorable. See for yourself…

Now begins the great doggie debate in earnest. Should we add a second dog to our family? Nina loves dogs and I think she’d genuinely grow to love a companion. But it’s a lot of extra work, a lot of extra hair to clean up, and potentially a lot of extra money if any health issues should arise. Plus, I don’t want Nina to feel like we needed a replacement doggie because she wasn’t good enough. And who am I kidding? I also worry that Nina will love the new pup more than me and my little buddy will be preoccupied. Does anyone have any experience with adding a second dog to the family? I’d love to hear your advice!

When we first looked at our house, the yard captivated me. I didn’t love love the house. It was ok. It had potential. But I love loved the backyard. It’s fenced, it’s private, it has an inground pool and it looked perfect for letting the dog run and play. Along the side of the house there is a little stretch that is largely unused and it just screamed “vegetable garden” to me.

I wasn’t necessarily planning to plant a garden this year with everything else we’re doing, but Katy Elliott, Bethany of b*spoke and Maggie inspired me with all of their garden chatter and it became apparent that a garden had to be built. My mom made the trip down to help me out, making the adventure all the more fun. I knew I wanted raised bed box gardens – I just think they are so cute. And if I’m going to do something, it has to be cute. (Sadly, I really do think this way.) I decided on two 4′x4′ box gardens and enlisted my husband Mike’s help measuring the area where they would go. He then got to work removing the existing sod.

It was blazing hot that day and our black lab, Nina, was feeling the heat. She decided to “help” Dad out by digging around in the newly dug up dirt and curling up in it to cool off.

Here she is in all of her dirt-covered glory, while Mike breaks his back ripping up the yard so I can realize my dream of adorable little box gardens in our side yard. She is such a good helper!

After the sod was removed, my mom and I built the box gardens while Mike went back to painting inside. (We like to multi-task around here.) We used 2×10 pine, which I purchased in 16′ lengths at Home Depot where they kindly cut each piece into four 4′ sections, free of charge. (Remember if you build a garden that pressure treated lumber is a no no. No one wants nasty chemicals in their food!) Using 2-1/2″ exterior screws, we attached the boards together with three screws at each corner. We set them in place, leveled them up and then filled them with a combination of Scott’s Miracle-Gro Garden Soil and peat moss at a ratio of about 3:1.

When thinking about what plant, I decided to keep it simple this first year and focus on things I love. In the end I went for lots of tomatoes, tons of herbs, a couple of bell peppers (one orange, one red) and a lone zucchini plant.

I went with six tomato plants in four different varieties – roma, yellow cherry, striped heirloom and 4th of July tomatoes. (Whatever those are – I admit to picking it because the photo looked good.) For herbs I went with two basil plants (I have a serious basil addiction), oregano, dill, curly parsley, flat leaf parsley, and cilantro.

So there you have them! My very first vegetable garden(s). I’m so excited to see everything grow and can’t wait to get my hands dirty this year learning the ropes. We are also members of a local CSA so my main goal is to supplement our CSA share and learn more about tending to a garden. I’ll share the progress as the summer goes on! Anyone else planning a garden this year?

In March my husband and I closed on our first home (a fixer) and since then I’ve spent the last few months studying paint chips, home renovation blogs, and pouring over countless shelter magazines for inspiration. After years of being obsessed with interiors and architecture (and far too many architecture and interior design courses to count) I’m pretty secure in my personal style. I’ve kept scrapbooks of magazine tear sheets since I was about 11. Literally. And recently I started a flickr photostream to help track photos I find and love. However, just for fun the other night I decided to take a few style quizzes I saw mentioned on Young House Love. All of these quizzes operate on the same basic premise – you look at a bunch of photos of interiors showing different styles and colors and select the photos that you find most appealing. At the end of the quiz you read all about your personal style. Pretty easy, right?

According to Sproost, my style is Cottage Chic -

I love this answer. It’s so me! “You love the carefree spirit that the cottage interior inspires, but you are also serious about your appreciation for modern art and hip treasures. You love old and new alike, and love to highlight them all to expose the uniqueness of each.” All true. I also love the bit about, “Your true inspiration (whether you know it or not) is the sea… the colors found at your favorite beach: white and light beige of the sand, a variety of blues for the ocean and sky, and greens and pale grays of the sea glass…” Yes, yes and yes. Affirmative. If I have my way, when our house is all finished it will feel like waking up in a New England beach house every morning.

Ethan Allen calls my style Loft -

“Energetic. Fashion-driven. Practical. Materials borrowed from industry, architecture, and nature. Clean shapes. Punches of color. Spontaneous and fresh. Kids and pets? Bring them on.” Again, all true. This is getting fun!

The last quiz I took is the one from HomeGoods, where they deemed my look Country Casual -

According to HomeGoods, “You love unique finds, and can turn a few mismatched garden chairs or floral teacups into a charming arrangement. You appreciate a pretty mix of relaxed pieces, like painted wood or weathered furniture, lovely florals and other patterns, lots of throws and pillows, mementos and bunches of fresh flowers that give your home a unique sense of breeziness and charm.” Also spot on!

All in all, these quizzes are all pretty accurate. (Or at least they were for me!) I think they’d be a great tool if you aren’t really sure where to start when thinking about how to decorate your home. Knowing what colors, shapes and styles appeal to you will allow you to pick and choose elements that you can use throughout your space for a cohesive look that you’ll love.

Not long after my husband and I were married I shared with you my reasoning behind why I didn’t change my last name and today I figured it might be time to share with you why I got married. I’m sure it seems pretty straightforward to most of you, but as it turns out there is at least some degree of confusion among people as to why two individuals might decide to get married. My reasoning behind marriage was pretty simple – I wanted to be a wife. While this may not seem like a shocker to you, allow me to clarify for a moment – I got married because I wanted to be a wife; I did not get married because I wanted to be a mother. At least in my world, the things are two wildly different roles, one of which I do not aspire to add to my list of credentials.

{Photo via Girls Just Wanna Have Funds}

Allow me to preface this conversation by noting that I love children, especially toddlers because they melt my heart, and I adamantly support my friends and family who have elected to make parenthood a part of their lives. I love and have limitless respect for women who chose to be mothers. (Thanks, Mom!) I simply don’t want to be one. Not now. Possibly not ever. Shockingly, in 2010 this is still an incredibly outlandish concept in most circles I run in so I thought I’d throw it out on the table so others who share my feelings can rest assured – you are not alone. There are at least a few of us running around out here in the wild who have no desire to be a mommy, despite society’s shock and awe at the thought of a woman not becoming a mother at some point in her adulthood.

So. Why did I get married? Simply put, because I love my husband and I wanted to spend my life with him. I wanted to be his partner, his confidant, his best friend, his biggest fan and his partner in crime for all the days of my life. In turn, I wanted someone to travel the world with, to grow with, someone to challenge me to do better, and to spend my days with someone whose very presence makes accomplishments large and small infinitely more meaningful and more exciting. In other words, I got married to share my life with him and in turn to share his life with him. It just so happens, Mike is the greatest person I know and I love him dearly so it only made sense he should be that person. I got married because I wanted to be his wife, partner, friend and coach. Becoming parents is irrelevant to all the ways we love each other and all the ways we’re committed to each other so while I can’t say definitively we’ll never be parents, it certainly played no role in if we got married. If we decide to become parents, that commitment will be a separate oath we take on the day we decide to go down that path. Until then, I’m no less of a wife nor any less of a person because I have no plans to become a mother.

With all that said, it has to be noted that six months into marriage I’m growing a little weary of all the people who won’t give up on their quest to beat us into submission with regards to their will for us to have a baby. I find it incredibly odd that before you’re married, most socially-adjusted people wouldn’t even think about inquiring about your sex life at every family gathering and social occasion, but once you’ve signed a marriage license all bets are off – your sex life can be mentioned, without fear of recourse, at will pretty much any time of day or night, regardless of the appropriateness of the situation. Honestly, what is with people constantly asking me when I’m going to have a baby? What if we were trying to have a baby and we couldn’t for some reason? Does anyone ever stop to think about how horribly inappropriate it is to butt into someone else’s plans, or lack thereof, to procreate? And, while we’re at it, if even one more person tells me that my “clock is ticking,” that my “eggs are dying” or that it’s “your turn next” I might scream. No. It is not my “turn” – this is not a board game. This is life, people! Motherhood is not something you pick up on a whim while you’re out at the mall shopping, it’s an incredibly important decision that can only be made between the people involved, not an issue up for public debate. Life is not a democracy and you get no say in my decisions regarding reproduction.

I’ll save my laundry list of reasons for not wanting to be a mother for another post (and why, if I do decide to be a mom, I’ll probably be adopting), but for now suffice it to say that the motivation behind my getting married was to be married, not to be a parent. Whatever your reasoning for getting married, I support it, and I’d love if even a few more people could support mine. Oh, and while we’re at it, if you could stop telling me that I’m “young” and that I’ll change my mind it would be very much appreciated. Whether you like it or not, I’m not having a baby. Final answer.
