My green perch, late June edition

Posted 06/29/2010 by Maggie in Eco Living, Outdoor Life \ 2 comments

Since we last saw my urban garden, I had herbs and veggies coming in nicely. Since then, my plants have been growing like wildfire! It tickles me to no end to see all the green out there. So much so, in fact, that I expanded the garden with the help of my mom, who I like to call “The Plant Whisperer.” My mom oversaw the planting of loads of flowers and helped put together a few new pots. As the …

Let the Gardening Games Begin!

Posted 06/21/2010 by Cyd in Around the House \ 3 comments

When we first looked at our house, the yard captivated me. I didn’t love love the house. It was ok. It had potential. But I love loved the backyard. It’s fenced, it’s private, it has an inground pool and it looked perfect for letting the dog run and play. Along the side of the house there is a little stretch that is largely unused and it just screamed “vegetable garden” to me.

I wasn’t necessarily planning to plant a garden this …

Urban Patio Gardening

Posted 03/10/2010 by Maggie in Outdoor Life \ 4 comments

We’re lucky enough to have a large patio in our new apartment. While I love grilling and lounging in the sun with a good book as much as the next person, I must confess the biggest reason our patio excites me: GARDENING! The patio of our last apartment was always too windy for anything to prosper, but I’m hopeful that the interesting angles of our new patio will provide protection from the wind and offer both sun and shade.

I’ve so …

What’s Worth More: Your Time or Your Money?

My husband and I have been living in our house for just over 365 days. Last year, when we moved in, our 1/2 acre of property was already covered in warm-hued leaves; the trees were bare. Because we didn’t have a rake — or very much time — we hired a lawn care company to do a Fall clean-up. They mowed and raked and tidied up our property in just a couple of hours.

This year, I watched in dread …

On composting, and other dirt.

Posted 10/19/2009 by Briana in Eco Living \ 2 comments

As you may or may not know, my husband and I are currently living in a tiny 2-bedroom apartment (shared with our two cats, Mike and Butters).  We have no outdoor space, save for our tiny patio and lil’ windowboxes, which don’t provide us with much gardening opportunity.

As someone who grew up in a home with lots of garden space and a little “plot” of my own, it’s heartbreaking for me to not have a bit of dirt.  Thus, it’s become our …

DIY Herb Garden

Posted 06/19/2009 by Rebekah in Crafts, Outdoor Life \ 1 comment

My neighbor Leigh built this amazing potted herb garden in her backyard and I asked her to share! She found a similar project at Ikea, but decided to DIY her own version. She’s pretty handy around the house, and if I ever needed a repair done she’s the first person I would call for help.

Materials:
2 landscaping timbers, cut to 6 feet each
1 6×2×12 board, cut into two  6 foot pieces
8 3 inch wood screws
10-20 screws (depending on type of pot …

Veggie Gardening 101

This post goes out to those of you who have always wanted to grow your own food, but haven’t gotten around to it or don’t know how.  I’m here to tell you that if I can do it, you can too (I’m the klutziest, and some might say laziest, girl around).  It’s healthy, gratifying, and fun, with a high return on your investment. That’s my kind of hobby.

Craft: Make your own “topsy turvy”

Posted 05/05/2009 by Rachel in Eco Living, Outdoor Life \ 4 comments

This is the second year that my husband and I have had a little vegetable garden in the back yard, and tomatoes are one of our favorite things to grow.  One problem is that the plants get very large and need to be staked or put in the support cages to keep them upright, so every time we saw the “Topsy Turvy” commercial on TV we thought it sounded like a great idea!

This year, we decided to give growing tomatoes …

Garden: Container Gardens

Posted 04/22/2009 by Anne K in Outdoor Life \ 4 comments

Last summer, I discovered a love for growing herbs and flowers. Despite having limited space, we had a porch container garden.  I’m not Martha Stewart, but I found it was a lot easier than I originally thought. As newbies to gardening, we went to our local Garden Center for guidance. This was the best course of action for us. I highly recommend this because your local Garden Center/Greenhouse has a wealth of knowledge about plants that grow best in your …
