Iced Coffee, Anyone?

Welcome to the EAD Living blog! We are so excited to have you here. If you are a new visitor, we'd love for you to subscribe to our RSS feed and visit our sister site, EAD Weddings. Thanks for visiting and we hope you come back soon!

Have you all seen this trick? Next time you brew a pot of coffee, make an extra cup, pour it into an ice cube tray, and freeze. Then when you’re craving iced coffee on a hot summer day, you can use the coffee ice cubes instead of water ones… no diluted coffee!

You can do the same thing with tea, or even juice or lemonade. No one wants a watered-down beverage, right? It did take almost the whole tray to make my freshly brewed hot coffee suitably icy, so save these up for a single-serving special treat.

Product Review: Breville ikon Multi-Speed Juicer

A representative from Breville emailed last month and asked me to review their iKon Multi-Speed Juice Fountain. As I have wanted a juicer for several years, I immediately said yes yes yes! You know we’re eager to review great products here at EAD, with the condition being that all reviews are completely unbiased and truthful.  If we don’t love a product, we’re going to tell you.

First, the machine is huge!  It takes up most of our counter space.  If you don’t have a lot of room, I would highly recommend getting the compact version instead.  You lose a lot of the features, but it doesn’t take up as much room.

Second, the juicer is incredible.  From the packaging to the scrub brush everything is perfectly made and well put together.  They even have recipes in the operations manual!  I cannot rave about the quality of this machine enough.

Recipe: “Prune” juice

(via dominomag.com)

It’s January which means that citrus is in season! Check out your local produce market for deals that you can’t find the rest of the year on oranges, lemons and grapefruits. Just yesterday I purchased 20 limes, 14 oranges and 5 grapefruits all for $3.00! Once you have taken your bounty home and realize you have no idea what to do with all of it try this new twist on homemade orange juice courtesy of Domino Magazine. It’s delicious with lots of vitamin C too!

Prune Juice
4 cups orange juice
3 cups ruby-red-grapefruit juice
1/3 cup lemon juice
1/3 cup Meyer lemon juice
1/3 cup lime juice

Combine all ingredients, chill and serve.

Holidays: Tree trimming party

I love getting our home ready for Christmas.  My husband and I have a constant battle over white v. colored lights, and I’m always trying to figure out some way to make things fresh - and easy.  Last year we invited a bunch of friends over on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to help us clean up the leftovers.  This year I decided to take things one step further - I used the leftovers as a bribe to get our local friends to help us trim our tree.  Our friends, most of whom did not play host and thus didn’t have leftovers to enjoy, came over to enjoy our leftovers.  While my husband heated up the last few items before dinner and as he cleaned up after dinner, a bunch of my friends helped me trim our tree.

The keys to a good tree trimming party (and a bonus recipe for apple cake): {Read the rest of this entry…}

Recipe: Pumpkin Spice Latte

This is a fantastic holiday drink that my sister and all of her guests raved about at her Halloween party.  It’s just in time for all your Thanksgiving festivities!

Pumpkin Spice Latte

2 cups milk (you can use lowfat milk)
2 T canned pumpkin
2 T white sugar
2 T vanilla (adjust vanilla to taste)
1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
(OR: 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/8 tsp cloves, 1/8 tsp nutmeg, and a teeny tiny pinch of ground ginger)
1/2 cup brewed espresso or 3/4 cup strong brewed coffee
Garnish with whipped cream (optional)

Directions:

This makes enough for 2 people to have a big mug with a bit leftover, but can be doubled just as easily.

Add the coffee/espresso and milk to the crockpot. Whisk in the pumpkin, spices, sugar, and vanilla.

Cover and cook on high for 2 hours if everything is cold. You can warm the milk in the microwave just a minute or two to reduce the crockpot time to an hour.

Ladle into mugs, and garnish with whipped cream and cinnamon.
