Real Weddings: Penny + Brian

It’s official. I love each and every little thing about Penny and Brian’s wedding. When I saw what the lovely Liesl of Photo Pink shared, I absolutely beamed with excitement and I couldn’t wait to show it to you!

Penny and Brian were married at the Frost Valley YMCA in Claryville, New York, a 6,000 acre property founded in 1901. The couple either created all of the elements themselves or enlisted the help of talented Etsy sellers to create a truly homemade wedding!

Guests were given adorable flags to wave as Penny and Brian exited the YMCA’s Ketcham chapel.  The flags were a gift from one of Penny’s bridesmaids and were hand-painted by Jeff Canham.  This is one of the cutest wedding details I’ve seen!

Penny’s gorgeous gown is by Birnbaum and Bullock and was purchased from The Bridal Garden in New York City, a wonderful little boutique that sells sample designer gowns at a discount and donates all proceeds to charity.

The beautiful centerpieces feature flowers from Penny’s backyard or that she picked along the roadside, and the doilies and glass jars were sourced from yard sales, ebay, and her home.

The guest book was a completely unique idea, handmade by Penny.  She created a wedding tree where each leaf, acorn, and bird represented a guest, and its position and color indicated the guest’s relationship to Penny and Brian.  What a wonderful keepsake!

Penny and Brian are experimental film makers, so in lieu of a traditional reception they held a film festival showing their work and the work of their friends.

Here is Penny’s film for Brian. You should totally watch it if you have the 16 minutes – it’s absolutely awesome.  This is her description of the film:

“In the summer of 1977, NASA sent Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 on an epic journey into interstellar space. Together and alone, they will travel until the end of the universe.

Each spacecraft carries a golden record album, a massive compilation of images and sounds embodying the best of Planet Earth. According to Carl Sagan, “[t]he spacecraft will be encountered and the record played only if there are advanced space-faring civilizations in interstellar space. But the launching of this bottle into the cosmic ocean says something very hopeful about life on this planet.”

While working on the golden record, Sagan met and fell madly in love with his future wife Annie Druyan. The record became their love letter to humankind and to each other.

In the summer of 2010, I began my own hopeful voyage into the unknown. This film is a love letter to my fellow traveller.”
