Classic + Timeless DC Wedding

There’s something utterly magical about DC during the cherry blossoms. It is the most romantic time of the year, and Liddy and Mark took full advantage of the gorgeous scenery during their April wedding. The couple met and fell in love while attending Georgetown Law School, so it was only natural that they hold their ceremony at Georgetown University’s St William Chapel. They fell in love with Daughters of the American Revolution, which overlooks the Washington Monument, for their reception. The classic DC feel was perfect for their cherry blossom arrangements created by Succulents and Saffron. From designing their own invitations to creating a German “beer garden” in honor of Liddy’s parents’ home in Berlin, the couple infused many unique and personal touches into their day. Every detail is perfect, right down to the cake from Buttercream Bakeshop. We adore each timeless image from Virgil Bunao!

From the bride: Mark and I wanted our wedding to be a reflection of us, but also acknowledge our families, both of whom have provided us with an unfathomable amount of love and support. Our wedding was in Washington, D.C. – where we met and fell in love – during cherry blossom season. For the ceremony, we chose a small chapel at Georgetown University, since we met at Georgetown Law School. For the reception, we fell in love with Daughters of the American Revolution, which overlooks the Washington Monument and looks and feels exactly like the Washington, D.C. we know and love. Most of our guests came from out of town, and we wanted the reception to feel like an elegant, special DC affair, but also fun, fresh and with many personal touches to make it our own. With our families’ help, it turned out to be the most special, beautiful, and happiest day of our lives.

We did many things ourselves, with our families – including the website, save the dates, escort cards, table cards, invitations, welcome boxes, favors, and programs. I wore a vintage green diamond necklace and a diamond and sapphire bracelet that belonged to my husband’s great-grandmother. I learned calligraphy for the paper goods, which was challenging but fun. We used picnic tables to create a German “beer garden” at the reception in honor of my parent’s home in Berlin and Mark’s love of beer, which also included soft pretzels and authentic German mustard. We set up a special whiskey and wine bar showcasing specialties from the Pacific Northwest – where Mark’s family lives. We did this with the help of our families, who filled their suitcases with German mustard and chocolates, Dallas beer (my hometown), and specialty cocktail ingredients from the Pacific Northwest. It was truly a team effort between both our families! We named our tables after each of the 13 colonies and as favors we gave coffee from our favorite NYC coffee shop, stamped with our new monogram.

My dad, who is a pastor, performed our ceremony, which made it so meaningful and special. My little niece, despite having a meltdown the night before at the rehearsal, stole the guests’ hearts as she walked down the aisle with a big smile on her face in her pretty dress (she looked like a ball of tulle!). We wrote our own vows, and Mark’s were so beautiful that he had most of the guests in tears. My favorite moment was right after we had finished our vows, Mark looked at me and whispered “you’re my wife.” I’ll never forget it.
