Elegant New Orleans Wedding at Maison Montegut

Elena and Jonathan’s wedding vision was “Grace Kelly does New Orleans” and wow, did they deliver! With classic, timeless elements inspired by her grandmother’s wedding and a palette of soft blues and mustard yellow, their New Orleans wedding at Maison Montegut pays homage to their families while creating a chic and sophisticated atmosphere. Emily Sullivan Events made sure the day went off without a hitch, and Poppy and Mint created florals with vibrant pops of yellow to accent the fresh greenery of the courtyard reception. Their day is beautifully captured by Mon Soleil Weddings!

In their own words

What is your proposal story?

We were long distance for the majority of our relationship. One weekend he flew down from Illinois to Florida one Saturday in November he had it all set up worked with one of my best friends to get me out to New Smyrna Beach. He was there on the beach waiting for me (I didn’t realize he was even in the state) he had written me a long handwritten love letter and when I was done reading it he got down on one knee and asked me! He had also arranged for a professional photographer to be there to capture everything and have brought both of our fur babies along for photos afterwards. It was absolutely perfect and so meaningful! He picked a spot that is incredibly special to us, wrote me a letter which is one of my favorite things and included our fur babies!

What were your favorite parts of the day?

I loved so many things! I would say the top 3 were when the doors opened there was an audible gasp from the crowd, and I loved walking up the aisle to Jon knowing when I walked back down I would be his wife! Another favorite of mine was the Second Line. This is a traditional New Orleans celebration that consists of a parade with a jazz band and the entire wedding party and guests. It really made the wedding fun and unique! Finally my Abuela, who had passed in September, helped me plan much of the details of our wedding! It was really wonderful to see all of the things we had planned together come to life! Ever since I first got engaged, my abuela and I spent days and months passing the time planning my wedding!

Did you include any family heirlooms or special traditions?

We did have family heirlooms, my favorite was the mantilla veil that was lent to us by my great aunt Bella! It is English Lace that was made by an embroiderer, who also made lace for the Queen Mary the wife of King George V. It was made for Bella’s mother’s wedding in 1914. It was brought from England to Spain and then finally to Cuba by Bella’s Tia Alejadrina. Bella, her daughters and daughter-in-law also used the veil so, it was such an honor to have it as part of our day! We used it as the mantilla for the mantilla ceremony, a Cuban wedding tradition involved placing a veil across the shoulders of both the bride and groom during the wedding mass. We asked my madrina (Bella’s daughter Carmen) and her brother, Gus, to drape it around us during the ceremony. It is traditional that the padrinos (godparents) are the ones that put it around the couple but my padrino (Tia Carmen’s husband Tio David) had passed away so I asked my Tio Gus to do it with Tia Carmen. It was very fitting because he also was the one that stood in for Tio David at my baptism! We also had a Lasso ceremony which we chose my cousins Gus and Mary Anne to perform.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?

Assemble a great team of vendors and trust their advice but stay true to your individual vision! I think another thing that was very helpful for us was making google docs because it allowed me to share them with my vendors and planner as a live document that I could continue to change! It was much more helpful than just having a pinterest board (which I did have) but this allowed me to say I really love this but don’t like how it has that next to the photos.
