Classic Martha’s Vineyard Wedding

It was important to Allison and Michael that their love of Martha’s Vineyard shine through in all their wedding festivities, so each of the events of the weekend was held at a location that was significant to couple. They started out with a welcome party at the beach club where they met, then to a ceremony in Allison’s childhood church, and finally an elegant reception at Edgartown Yacht Club. With a soft blush and white color palette, a beautiful historic church, and a getaway boat to whisk the new bride and groom away to their yacht club reception, these beautiful photos by Jocelyn Filley are what classic New England wedding dreams are made of!

In their own words

How did you meet?

We first met during college working summertime jobs on the Vineyard. The island is such a special place to us, having both grown up spending the summers there. But with Michael on Chappy & myself in Edgartown, our paths didn’t cross until working at the Chappaquiddick Beach Club.

What is your proposal story?

Few people can really say “I had NO idea” that was coming as it relates to an engagement. But truly, a proposal wasn’t even on my radar that April weekend on the Vineyard. Michael & I decided we wanted an escape from Boston for a quiet weekend on island. We spent the morning paling around our favorite spots on Chappy & going on relaxing beach walks. While at Wasque Point, Michael got down on one knee & popped the question!

What was the most important to the two of you while planning? Was there anything that you chose to splurge on or skip?

We spend as much time as we can out on the water while on the Vineyard in the summertime, so we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to arrive to our reception by boat. We sent our bridal party to the reception ahead of us & then arrived ourselves afterwards to all of our guests greeting us from the dock. A favorite drink of ours – one that we typically cap our dinners & nights with – is an espresso martini, so we decided to serve them when our late night bites (mini milkshakes, cheeseburgers & grilled cheeses + french onion soup shooters) were being served. They were quite the hit!

What were your favorite parts of the day?

Our boat arrival will definitely remain one of our favorite memories! Seeing all of our guests from the water greeting us with cheers was awesome. Another special moment was being able to fire the Edgartown Yacht Club cannon at the end of the dock & lowering the American Flag at sunset as part of a club tradition.

Do you have any advice for couples planning their weddings now?

Don’t get yourself worked up over the little details! It’s hardly worth the energy stressing over something that your guests probably won’t take notice of. And beyond anything else, enjoy yourself & the day! The tone of a wedding is set by the couple & your guests will take cues from you – if you’re having a good time, they will too!
